I am in this spree of soul searching, setting goals, for which I have to thank the infectious energy of Archana Dutta and Neha Kirpalani. I have been trying a series of journal prompts. The first one is my first principle of any clarity exercise : What would I do, how would I fill my time and attention with, if all my needs were met? And most importantly, there was no one, absolutely no one to witness me - not to criticise, but more importantly - nor anyone to applaud and validate? What would I do? The list is below. It was such a pleasure hosting an amazing team from Google India, led by Sanjay Gupta, at our offices yesterday. The backdrop was a great conversation that Sanjay and I had sometime in April, while we were driving to the airport at Kolkata after an IIM Calcutta Innovation Park Board meeting. Among the Big 5 tech companies (often referred to by the acronym FAANG), I had always believed that Google had a genuine tech-DNA, which reflected in it's deep commitment to developing cutting edge technologies and doing things thoughtfully. The conversation with Sanjay was an eye opener for me where I got to understand how Google had been doing so much beyond "Search, Cloud and AI", and was attempting to solve some of humanity's most wicked problems in the countries it operated in. The deep sense of empathy and commitment to solving such problems was quite palpable. Predicting the 3D protein structure has been one of the grand challenges of life sciences. Solving this challenge required enormous scientific research and computational resources, but breakthrough on this front would unlock enormous rewards - deepen our understanding of health, disease, environment, drug development and sustainability. #AlphaFold, a cutting edge AI platform, developed by Google DeepMind has computationally predicted 200 million protein structures that are now freely and openly available to the global scientific community. The extent of deep knowledge, created often through a huge investment of time and money, that a company puts out on open source is often a surrogate for it's human values. Google India is collaborating with several organizations and research instituons to strengthen their ability to extend the frontiers of knowledge that could result in sustainable solutions and a better quality of life for everyone, especially for those who have traditionally been on the fringes of development. Simplicity of #Indian technology makes it extremely tamper proof, integrated and scaled, a great large democracy process is executed with ease and predictability. Reducing complexity in the solution stack is key to improve #resilience and improve #maintainability. Unfortunately in my job, I see everyone starting with a statement that this is complicated or extremely complex. Key to building successful solution, is to uncomplicate things and bring in #modularity (to do one job really well) and #composability (to be a good team player in a larger ecosystem). Like in an orchestra if you are a good team player, the conductor can create a great symphony.

On the occasion of its 10th anniversary earlier this month, Brillio associated with #TimesTechies to organise a panel discussion on the AI revolution and its impact on tech jobs. We had an excellent group of speakers that included Raj Mamodia, chairman, founder & CEO of #Brillio, Sangeeta Gupta, SVP and chief strategy officer at #Nasscom, and Christopher Merlan, chief digital officer at American Society of Clinical Oncology. They said AI is a big opportunity for technologists, and they should not fear AI. Raj said the future is going to be engineering, and India has the scale, has the talent and has the investment of the last 30 years into this field to now take advantage of all of these. But all of them also said techies will have to reskill and retool themselves. And businesses will have to invest in being innovative, and look at new business models.  Harsh K. Sharad Kohli writes the story of Rajith Nair and Prasanth Thankappan, who founded Inntot Technologies Pvt Ltd. in 2014 with the idea of developing a digital radio receiver that decodes radio-frequency (RF) signals using software rather than a dedicated decoder chip, thus obviating the need to invest in specialised and expensive hardware. Their technology is today part of more than 600,000 vehicles, across 10 car models and 25 variants. Inntot was among Nasscom’s League of 10 last year, an award that recognises deep tech startups creating new products or solutions with unique IP and potential impact. Rajith and Prashanth are now working to develop more immersive audio experiences inside a car. Madhuri Raya, VP of software engineering at #Optum India, writes for our `Career Ladder for Women’ column. She says it’s important to realise that a career is a marathon and not a sprint.
