The UK's delicate industrial strategy balancing act: our service industry must embrace GenAI, but the risk is that we hand our future to US BigTech. My article in Bright Blue's new collection of essays on the impact of Generative AI, alongside such luminaries as Kenneth Cukier Rose Luckin Gerard Grech Tom Watson. "It is easy to be cynical about endless promises surrounding the transformative potential of AI. However, even if the current break-neck pace of technological development were to slow down, we are already seeing the first stirrings of a productivity revolution, especially in the services industry. This matters because the UK is the second-biggest exporter of services in the world, and, at present, we face a conundrum. If we do not embrace the AI opportunity, then we risk falling behind and losing our competitive edge. But, if we do fully embrace AI, we risk handing the keys to our economy over to the US tech giants on whose AI platforms our technological future depends." Let's hope that the next Government has the bandwidth and vision to focus on both aspects of this challenge. This breakthrough lays the groundwork for tackling SDoH, which significantly influence 80% of our health, whereas healthcare alone only addresses 20%. 🛑 Who will own #AI in #healthcare? This question worries me as AI could create more inequalities. The Open-Source AI versus Closed Source AI debate is critical. 🛑 There is also a second order effect that worries me. If technology allows us to extend life by 30 years, can the planet sustain a population where everyone lives to 120? Are we potentially creating a larger issue? 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐈. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞? "There is no scientific evidence that AI brings value in radiology". This is what a client told me early 2023. Although radiology is the most established AI category (with 75%+ of AI algorithms), at that time, I did not find any studies that could prove the opposite. Fortunately, in August 2023, the 1st significant scientific study proving the value of AI in radiology was released. Key finding of the study (funded by the Swedish cancer society): “The use of artificial intelligence in breast cancer screening is safe and can almost halve the workload of radiologists". However, AI is still a “nascent” technology in healthcare. 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞, 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜? First, I believe that "Value-based-care" needs a rebranding in Europe/Germany. Then, Value-Based-Care is happening in Germany: ➡️ Capitation model in primary care: GPs in Germany should now get a fixed (capitated) amount per year for each type of patient they have, moving away from the current fee for service model. Whether a patient comes 20 times a year or not at all, the GP still receives the same fixed amount. In this capitated model, doctors are encouraged to proactively care for their patients' health, rather than waiting for them to fall ill. ➡️ Quality contracts in joint surgery: In June 2023, a group of hospitals and payors in Germany came together to define quality metrics for hip/knee surgery. Surgery payments based on quality metrics (which include PROMs) is a declination of value-based-care in specialty care. #vbc

Awesome report from Rock Health (in the comments) about H124 digital health funding. 📈 Despite broader economic challenges, the digital health sector, including mental health, has shown resilience, raising $5.7B across 266 deals. There is a strong Series A pipeline, tapering off of unlabeled funding rounds and 3 public exits in Q2 2024 indicating a revival in the exit market and a return to more sustainable funding patterns​. Key insights about the mental health market: 🧠 Mental health continues to be the leading clinical indication in digital health funding, securing $682 million in H1 2024. This consistent top ranking highlights the ongoing investor interest and the market's recognition of the critical need for mental health solutions. 🤖 The focus on mental health is driven by a combination of increased awareness, the rising demand for accessible mental health services, and the integration of tech solutions...🙄 In fact, AI has become a significant factor in digital health investments, with 34% of the total sector funding going to AI-startups. Today we announce that we have successfully raised £20million to invest in scientific startups developing breakthrough solutions for deep decarbonisation. I joined Zero Carbon Capital in August '22 and it has been incredible! I happily spend my time talking to bold and intelligent entrepreneurs, searching for high impact investment opportunities, learning about industry sectors and technologies areas, and supporting our awesome portfolio companies in their long road ahead.
