As yesterday was Zero Food Waste day, I wanted to share some stats and facts on this topic... 🍓 Did you know that the average person wastes 70kg of food per year? That's approximately 140 meals!  👉 At HelloFresh, we're trying to tackle food waste one box at a time. Thanks to our efficient supply chain, the amount of food waste is cut down astronomically, compared to traditional retail. Also, our boxes help people to plan and manage their produce, limiting the amount that makes it to the bin 🥑 Did you know that, in 2023, the UK became the best performing market in food waste reduction within the Hello Fresh group?  👉 Globally Hello Fresh achieved a significant reduction of 77% of food waste per euro of revenue, with the UK being a key driver in this 🍑 Did you know that 6.4 million tonnes of food waste could have been eaten? Lots of food gets thrown away due to be misshapen, discoloured or generally 'ugly', meaning that it doesn't make it onto the shop floor or isn't used at home. Embracing Change and Growth 🌱 Three weeks ago, I made a bold decision to leave Meta without having another job lined up. It was a leap into the unknown, driven by a deep need for change and a desire to prioritise myself and my personal growth. It was a scary move, but sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone to find new opportunities for learning and growth. The journey to finding a new role was not without its challenges. I encountered some challenging experiences with recruiters and companies: getting to the final rounds only to be ghosted, not receiving feedback after multiple rounds, and discovering that positions had been filled weeks ago without any communication. While I understand that recruiters might not always provide personalised feedback, hearing nothing at all is truly unacceptable as candidates put so much work into the recruitment process. I'm sure we all have our battle scars from interview processes. However, perseverance pays off! I'm delighted to share that I have secured a new role with a company that fits exactly what I was looking for. I had a fantastic interview experience and felt truly valued throughout the process, which has me incredibly excited to start on Monday. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. Only insecure managers and organizations put schemes in place to track employees, if you know you are adding value to employees in a way they can not get elsewhere, you will not be afraid to track output and value addition instead of presence. The litmus test that you are in bondage is that your organization put a scheme in place to track your life instead of your delivery. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

It's great to see more and more companies (including many of my clients) becoming B Corp certified. This includes SME's and eCommerce/retail giants such as The White Company who announced it yesterday - there's over 2000 certified B Corps in the UK right now. As a woman, I have faced and will continue to face more financial challenges than a man (thanks gender pay gap and maternity leave...🙄) And not long ago, after another inspiring conversation with my lovely Co-Founder Emma Storey, I told myself that I wanted to make a really conscious effort to start to fully understand my finances. Not just because I wanted to be 'better with money' but because I wanted to go into the granular level of detail needed, ready for me to make a proper investment plan. Now, if I'm honest, in the past, I've always associated anything to do with the word 'investments' with people who have a heck of a lot more money than I do. Probably a man with lots of disposable income, who owns a company or two, has a portfolio of properties and who has more than one sports car parked on a very long driveway. Have I ever really associated the word 'investments' with ordinary people like me? A working mum of two who wants to live the best life that she can with what she's got, and who also wants to make a plan so that me and my family can enjoy the future? Definitely not. But starting this journey of understanding my personal finances, especially when it comes to the investments that I've previously made and the ones that I plan on making in the future, has left me feeling SO empowered and unexpectedly, it's actually boosted my confidence! I wish I'd done this years ago! Ladies, my message to you this Tuesday morning is that knowledge really is power when it comes to understanding your finances and if this is something that you've been putting off getting to grips with, don't wait any longer. Start now because I promise its not as overwhelming as it might seem! Financial literacy will equip you to better advocate for yourself in the workplace, will help you make informed decisions about savings, investments and career planning and it'll be the ripple effect we need to see more of that will lead to stronger financial foundations for the future generations of women to come! 'Girls just want to have funds' is a 10/10 recommendation for me if you're looking for an easy to digest read to start things off. A quick re-intro! Yesterday, alongside Philip Ringguth and Camilla Gallagher, I had the pleasure of attending YMS London, on behalf of Brandwatch, which focused on the ever-evolving Gen Z audience. I was fortunate to connect with lots of people across the industry and it was inspiring to see how brands are really becoming invested in finding new ways and strategies to help them better engage with Gen Z, a demographic that is reshaping the future of marketing. Everyone is obsessed with Gen Z. As a (true) Millennial, this has always been quite a mystery to me. How can a generation so close to mine be so far at the same time, and why should I care this much?   Yesterday, I was lucky to attend a brilliant presentation by Craft Media London who managed to crack that generation open. Here are my key takeaways:   Who is Gen Z again?   As a reminder, Gen Z covers humans from 12 to 27 years old. This means you are addressing people in 2 to 3 different life stages. In this sense, it's the widest generation. It's also the generation predicted to have the largest spending power—money they are excited to spend on beauty products, which they buy more often and earlier than any other generation. So the battle to win share of voice for Gen Z is a competitive one, but also well worth the time and effort.   What are Gen Z core beauty beliefs?   BEAUTY IS EXTERNAL. Gen Z is outwardly accepting but inwardly insecure (that came as a surprise to me). They seek to achieve external perfection and are willing to spend a lot of time and money to look a certain way. They are thirsty for knowledge and ingredients to achieve their beauty ideals.   ROUTINE IS PARAMOUNT. Gen Z isn’t rebellious. Beauty is their hobby, and they are obsessed with finding the right routine. The most watched content includes GRWM videos, followed by skincare routines and makeup routines.   They want to STAND OUT to FIT IN. A huge contradiction of this generation is they pride themselves on being bold and creative but are more influenced by trends and authoritative figures than any other generation. This is where trusted sources, influencers, and brands play a big role and need to be perceived as trustworthy and authentic.   They have a LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH SOCIAL MEDIA. They spend longer than anyone on their phone and 62% of them research products online before buying. However, they have a strong desire to disconnect and enjoy real-life interactions, valuing in-store experiences.   They are NOT SO SUSTAINABLE. Contrary to popular belief, they are sustainably conscious and have good ideas and intentions but are willing to compromise on values to save money. Sustainability is not their key driver but should be incentivized.   Big thanks to Craft Media London for nailing the essence of Gen Z and busting some myths for me. Is positive feedback really that rare? 🤔🤔 I’d love to know your thoughts. 🧀 While out at the weekend I popped into my local Aldi UK and found they’ve just launched a range of plant-based cheese. 🧀 For us ‘lactose freers’ finding a dairy-free alternative that a) doesn’t require a second mortgage and b) actually tastes good, can be a difficult task. Personal opinion: after trying the range I thought it was some of the best available from the UK supermarkets. So much so I wanted to pass on the compliment. BUT…I wasn’t able to. There was only the option to complain. I went back and forth through several menu options and…nothing. The chat bot didn’t even understand the phrase “positive feedback.” It made me sad and also think, are we really now in a world where positive feedback is so rare, it isn’t even listed as an option? ☀️ That’s your challenge today LinkedIn, go forth into the world and give someone positive feedback this week. DOES AUTHENTICITY MATTER FOR YOUR BRAND? OMG - Where do I start on this one? How about this story I noticed in the Daily Torygraph last week? The Spanish boss of Estrella Galicia, Aitor de Artaza, claimed British brewers were dishonest in suggesting the lager they were brewing was from Spain, when it was brewed in Britain. The hugely successful Madri, Exceptional lager, which markets itself as 'the soul of Madrid' is brewed in Tadcaster, Yorkshire by Molson Coors (not even British!). Spokespeople from the brewers say it's from a collaboration with a Spanish brewery La Sagra, that they acquired in 2017. It's also pitched as being more eco-friendly, not requiring transportation. Brewing under license isn't new. It's been around for donkeys - but it almost without exception is never the same as the original. I lived in Manila for four years and enjoyed the occasional icy cold original San Miguel in dark brown bottles. It was brewed under license elsewhere in Asia and Europe in similar brown bottles (but with tacky stick-on gold labels instead of the authentic scuffed white-on-glass printed original) - and didn't taste remotely the same. Do the young lager drinkers of the UK care? You might conclude not much if you look at the phenomenal sales of Madri - the most successful beer launch for years with sales topping £100M according to the owners. Certainly, even Mr Artaza is generous enough to acknowledge that the marketing whizzes at Molson Coors have done a terrific job of creating a plausible brand. My question is, how much of the success is due to retail push instead of customer pull? I'm pretty certain the distribution, financial and political clout a huge brewer like Molson Coors has, gives them an incredible advantage in being able to launch, seed and consolidate a new brand launch like Madri. Sure the product has to be acceptable enough to succeed too...although it's getting more and more difficult to tell lagers apart these days. Me. I'm with Aitor de Artaza (and not just because of the wonderful name!) I'd rather go with the guys who've been brewing their Estrella lager in the same Galacia region for over a century - and it coming from there. Champagne can only be called that if it comes from champagne. the French know what they're doing. Scotch Whisky (without an 'e') can only come from Scotland. I think people drinking Madri Exceptional should know it's coming from Tadcaster, Yorkshire - which is quite a distance from the soul of Madrid I'd suggest. ➡️ How I helped a fruit delivery startup increase annual turnover from £79k to £650k This was me (looking much younger!) in 2008 at Borough Market, London in my first part-time freelance marketing role for Fruitdrop - a startup company that delivered fruit to work places. It was just me and the founder Ben Thompson. Ben told me that he had a van, a fruit supplier at the market and and handful of clients in an office block in Canary Wharf plus another client in Reading. His projected annual turnover was c.£79k. Ben's background was in finance, not marketing, so he asked me how to grow his business. I looked at his delivery route from Borough Market to Canary Wharf to Reading and bought contact data for every business with over 20 employees on his delivery route. I researched the health benefits of eating fruit, designed a leaflet explaining how eating fruit every day led to happier, healthier and more productive employees and Ben wrote a personal letter with an introductory offer. Ben dropped off the letters and flyers in the blocks he delivered to and the rest went in the post on a Friday. The phone rang off the hook the following week! Over 2 years we did this over and over again, targeting companies by postcode so that the expansion could be controlled. He soon had more vans, more drivers and way more customers! His turnover increased to £650k pa. Ben now delivers all sorts of supplies to offices nationally under the name OfficeDrop. In 2018 his turnover was £7 million so I expect he has a turnover of over £10 million now.
