This is so welcome! Electricity System Operator (ESO) much needed approach to fixing the UK's existing grid connection queue. Proposals could halve the queue’s size, enabling earlier connection dates for viable projects. Under the reformed ‘First Ready, First Connected’ approach, projects will enter the connections process at ‘Gate 1’ but must reach certain criteria to arrive at ‘Gate 2’, at which point projects can obtain a queue position and a connection date. Is there a significant risk of cascade failure in the GB grid? Did it get close to LFDD on 22 December 2023? What can be done to reduce the risks? Today Sygensys has provided input linked below to the National Grid ESO Frequency Risk and Control Report 2024 consultation. https://lnkd.in/eyU9g2X3 In the response we focus on the event of 22 Dec 23 which was particularly concerning. There was a cascade event impacting at least 5 asset types in under 15 seconds. This led to a infeed loss of 1700MW. All of the faster frequency response services saturated, and frequency fell below 49.3 Hz, close to statutory limits. I would welcome comments and feedback on the attached document. How can contribute to maintain the excellent GB reliability record, which National Grid ESO and many others in the industry should commended for? What as an industry can we learn from this event which was a "near miss" to hitting Low Frequency Demand Disconnection? What would you have added? Extensive report shows radical upgrade of the UK electricity grid is crucial to meeting Net Zero goals: "Much of the UK’s electricity network was built in the 1950s and needs upgrading to accommodate this level of electricity usage. Around 15% of cables and almost half of substations may need replacing to meet the UK’s net zero goal." Meeting with U.S. customers this week to discuss digital infrastructure expansion and energy strategy. A key focus area is nuclear, with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) essential for sustainable, gigawatt-scale computing solutions. Great article from Sandy Plunkett behind a paywall, so some excerpts here:. Since the industrial revolution, it is the abundant and affordable access to energy that determines a country’s prosperity and competitive advantage, and by extension, the quality of life of its inhabitants. And life and industry today are insatiable for energy. The critical technologies coming on stream at scale globally – AI and data centres, robotics, advanced manufacturing, electric vehicles – all guzzle energy at an unprecedented and alarming rate. “The time for fairytales is over,” says Erik Townsend a renowned energy economics expert, hedge-fund manager, and host of the popular @Macrovoices podcast for sophisticated investors. “The economic tipping point of the energy transition crisis is coming far more quickly than the climate crisis tipping point.” Mr Townsend was in Australia this week when Australian tech entrepreneur Matt Barrie the founder and CEO of Freelancer.com – invited him to speak to a highly curious, economically and technologically savvy audience on the importance of adding nuclear energy into the clean energy mix. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) notes that a “plan for true transformation of the energy market from fossil fuels to renewables requires levels of investment in generation, storage and transmission and system services that exceed all previous efforts combined.” For Macro Voices’ Erik Townsend, that conversation must include nuclear energy, both the large-scale nuclear plants and development of the newer Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). “There can be no successful energy transition without nuclear energy,” said Mr Townsend, who last year produced a data-packed documentary series on the Green Energy Transition crisis and the pros and cons of all clean energy technologies. “Barring a breakthrough in deep geothermal, nuclear power is the only source of clean baseload energy that could realistically be built out to supply the extraordinary energy demand toward 2050. “There’s a massive disconnect between nuclear energy perception and nuclear energy reality today. All the primary problems – core meltdowns, hydrogen explosions, waste disposal – have been solved. “But those solutions have never been adopted and commercialised because government bureaucracy is standing in the way of progress.” Australia has the world’s largest reserves of uranium by a wide margin and has the second biggest deposits of Thorium, both essential for nuclear energy. If we are serious about finding and developing a reindustrialised economy on natural comparative advantage, that’s hard to beat.
