Pablos obviously understands this, but he didn't explain it in this talk: modern nuclear reactor designs aren't merely safer than the old light water reactors like Fukushima and Three Mile Island. (Chernobyl is a different old technology). Modern reactors, like a molten salt reactor, are designed around a failure mode that results in the nuclear reaction cessation (stopping). The modern reactor cannot create its own conditions that result in a meltdown and hydrogen explosions which destroy the containment vessel. The light water reactors designed in the 1960s and 1970s are, every single one of them, literally, disasters waiting to happen. The Germans after watching Fukushima unfold did the math on what happens when one of these older reactors fails not at the edge of the Pacific Ocean with the prevailing breeze blowing out to sea, but with the breeze blowing across a major city or one of the global breadbasket agricultural regions. They didn't like the odds. The world needs smarter nuclear fission designs. Government regulation isn't the only hurdle here, public understanding remains a big one. We need to tell the story of these new designs in a better way, we can't just expect and wait for people to figure it out on their own. Oh, and I haven't checked, but I'd bet a dollar that not *all* of the modern reactors have the safety profile of the molten salt reactors. Those that don't should be required to go back to the drawing board. We can't afford to build a new generation of nuclear reactors that are only somewhat safer than the Fukushima reactors of the 1970s. They need to be failsafe, because we need to build many new reactors, as is pointed out in the Q&A of this presentation.
