10 key statistics on diversity in UK tech ▶️ 29% of UK tech employees are women or non-binary. ▶️ 20% of software engineers are women or non-binary. ▶️ 21% of senior tech role holders are women. ▶️ 25% of UK tech employees are ethnic minorities; 5% are Black. ▶️ 22% of software engineers are ethnic minorities. ▶️ 14% of senior tech role holders are ethnic minorities. ▶️ 0.17% of tech employees identified as trans compared to 0.5% of the UK 16+ population, but only 1 in 4 companies are measuring trans identity in their workforce. ▶️ Just 3% of tech employees have disclosed they are neurodivergent whilst UK estimates for neurodivergence are 15-20%. ▶️ Only 9% of tech employees are reported to be from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This compares to 39% of the UK population. ▶️ 6% of tech employees are disabled compared to 23% of the wider working age population. The data comes from the Tech Talent Charter's annual diversity in tech survey of 708 organisations in the UK, employing close to 977,000 people. Their diversity in tech statistics are based on a total sample of close to 230,000 UK tech employees. The data was collected between July and October 2023. UK Tech Trends in 2024 📈 Happy belated #WWDC day to iOS network. Every single year it is exciting to see what one of the world's most famous innovators come up with to improve the iOS space. This year we had iOS 18, further development of visionOS and Apple Intelligence. Big year ahead once again! 🎉 I read a fascinating article by TechRepublic which perfectly summarised the same trends I am seeing in the UK tech market. Some of the key stand outs I am noticing at the moment include: ⭐ Increased AI and LLM integration whilst keeping in mind the consequences of utilising this technology ⭐ Appetite from investors to place their money into FinTech, ClimateTech and HealthTech ⭐ Strong focus on increasing team size heading into H2 of 2024 and start of 2025 With all the negativity of the tech crisis in 2023 and start of 2024, it is good to hear positivity ringing out across the market again. Issues for Technology professionals in the Current UK economy Here are some insights on the current recruitment obstacles faced by technology professionals in the UK: Quarterly Recruitment Outlook: According to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), hiring difficulties have eased, but significant concerns persist1. In the first quarter of 2024, 62% of UK firms attempted to recruit, up from 59% in Q4 2023. However, fewer firms reported recruitment difficulties (66% compared to 76% in Q4 2023). The production and manufacturing sector faced the most challenges in hiring staff (70%). Skills shortages remain a concern, impacting business opportunities and growth. Only 26% of businesses reported increased investment in staff training1. Skill Shortage Challenges:A guide for 2024 highlighted that 25% of hiring managers cited a shortage of skilled candidates as their primary obstacle. Other challenges included difficulties in competing on pay and benefits (22%) and a lack of approval for new headcount (19%) 2.Digital Skills Deficit: The UK tech sector faces a shortfall of over 100,000 skilled specialists. Despite more than two million job vacancies in tech, nearly 12 million workers lack essential digital skills 3.Government Efforts: The UK government is working closely with industry partners to address digital skills training and bridge the gap4. These insights highlight the ongoing challenges in recruiting technology professionals in the UK. As the industry evolves, addressing skills gaps and investing in training remain crucial for sustained growth
