Construction of the new Kirklees College in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire is the catalyst for the Waterfront Quarter regeneration scheme. The state-of-the-art £74 million campus and was one of only thirteen colleges in England funded by the Skills Funding Agency; with additional funding from Yorkshire Forward, Kirklees Council and the College’s own resources. The development covers 24,000 m2 (260,000 sq ft); is nine storeys high at its tallest and has been awarded a BREEAM 'excellent' rating for its low environmental impact. In addition, future expansion of the Waterfront Quarter allows for a further 17,600 m2 (190,000 sq ft) of office space, leisure facilities, restaurants and improved public realm with a new public square on a six acre (2.4 hectare) site near Huddersfield town centre. The project has also opened up the Huddersfield Narrow Canal under the site which provides cooling water for the new college building. This allows the public to access the river and canal side footpaths in this part of Huddersfield for the first time in living history.
