On World Zoonoses Day, celebrated annually on July 6, we reflect on the historical milestone of the first rabies vaccine administered on this day in 1885. Recognizing that approximately 60% of infectious diseases and up to 75% of emerging infectious diseases originate from animals, it's crucial to understand and address zoonotic diseases. These diseases, which can be transmitted from animals to humans, have significant global health impacts. 🤰❗Plant-based #diets can increase risks of #iodine deficiency – especially for pregnant women. A new WHO/Europe and Iodine Global Network report warns of declining milk and dairy consumption and limited iodine fortification of plant-based alternatives. That can be a problem for many countries of the WHO European Region. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable in the face of iodine deficiency as iodine is crucial for fetal development. Health authorities can update pre-natal dietary guidelines to emphasize iodine-rich foods and highlight potential gaps in plant-based diets, recommending additional sources of iodine if necessary. Over 30 years in the making, malaria vaccines are finally a reality! UNICEF has just delivered the first shipment of malaria vaccines to the Democratic Republic of Congo with nearly 700,000 doses. Malaria is one of the world’s most lethal diseases, killing nearly half a million children under 5 years of age each year in Africa. Thanks to the new malaria vaccines, children living in endemic areas will now be better protected from this deadly disease. UNICEF, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, World Health Organization and other partners are supporting governments to develop vaccine rollout plans, training health workers and securing the cold chain.

Donating blood saves lives.   While the need for blood is universal, access to blood is not. Many countries experience shortages. On the 20th anniversary of #WorldBloodDonorDay, thank you to everyone who has given – and still gives – blood.   And thank you to the health workers, blood transfusion services and civil society partners who support blood donation.
