A long-awaited moment has arrived! Sixteen people from #Gaza with critical health needs arrived safely in Spain yesterday evening to continue their life-saving treatment. This includes 15 children and the mother of two, Nahala Ismail. Nahla is accompanying her daughters, Muntaha and Nada. "I am hoping so much for my daughter to be treated," says Nahla, "We went through very difficult times. My daughter is injured and I am injured as well, I already went through an operation and the doctor told me it is a blessing I am walking again. I need to be strong." "I travelled with my 2 daughters leaving my injured husband and 4-year-old son in the south waiting for their evacuation. My husband died waiting and my son is now alone with relatives in Gaza. My heart breaks every minute. I need to remain strong and I pray to be reunited with my child again." The evacuation to Spain was supported through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism in partnership with WHO. The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund facilitated the patients’ documentation. The Government of Egypt supported their care while they were there, and Spain is providing similar support. A huge thank you as well to our colleagues at the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean and WHO Occupied Palestinian Territory. Thousands more children and adults in Gaza are in need of urgent care for life-threatening conditions. WHO once again calls for an end to war. There can be no #healthforall without peace. And still…. So much more to be done to understand and treat Long Covid, especially in children where the syndrome can present in so many varying ways.
In a joint BMJ article, WHO/Europe and Long Covid Kids call for greater awareness, resources, and #rehabilitation services for children and adolescents with #longcovid. The latest data from 🏴 and 🏴 shows that in the month ending 7 March 2024: ❗️>100,000 3-17 year olds had self-reported long COVID symptoms ❗️>20,000 of these found their ability to undertake daily activities had been limited ‘a lot.’ 💡Yet, appropriate medical screening, rehabilitation, and assistive technologies can support those living with long covid by improving physical, mental, cognitive, and social functioning to perform essential everyday tasks such as self-care, communication, or mobility. 💡With greater efforts and funding to identify, treat, and support young people living with the condition, they can be offered the best possible opportunities for enjoying a full and active life. Current #AvianInfluenza outbreaks are worrying—but it is not a new disease and different strains have differing consequences. In fact, the virus causing the current outbreaks, H5N1, first emerged in 1996-97 in Hong Kong and later remerged in 2003-04. It has continuously evolved since then and is commonly found in farmed poultry and wild birds around the world. 🗨️ WHO/Europe's Aisling Vaughan explains all you need to know, and what is already in place to control potential outbreaks.
