Last week, people in the UK were among the billions eligible to vote by the end of 2024. Congratulations to those who have been elected to serve the UK as members of parliament. We look forward to working with you on the vital task of strengthening democracy around the world. Because when democracy thrives at home and abroad, every one of us benefits. But this historic election year takes place at a time when democracy everywhere is at risk. That should worry us all, because evidence shows that democracy is good for people and the planet. Democracy can solve the problems that matter to people and address global challenges, but it cannot thrive without constant effort – and it should never be taken for granted.
