Scaling clean cooking solutions in African urban informal settlements The ENACT project team (ICLEI Africa and Energy 4 Impact), led by ICLEI Africa as lead implementers, hosted a dynamic peer-to-peer exchange programme in Kampala, Uganda last month. This programme brought together stakeholders collaborating on the ENACT project over the past three years, including representatives from national government ministries & departments, and local governments from the project cities, Freetown and Kampala. Delegates from neighbouring municipalities around the Greater Kampala Municipal Area - Wakiso, Nansana, and Entebbe - also participated. Highlights included: 📣Kisenyi informal settlement community engagement event and site visits, where it was refreshing to hear from early adopters of the technologies (EPCs, ICS, briquettes and LPG) being deployed through the project. Residents spoke fondly about the significant cost and time savings they have experienced since switching to these technologies. ⭐ENACT surpassed its target of 1500 households and businesses in Kisenyi and environs using clean cooking interventions - thanks to the innovative approaches promoted by ENACT local partners - consortium of WANA Energy Solutions - Wesgas and Green Bio Energy Ltd, the support of the Kisenyi community leaders as well as the enabling environment and support provided by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (Uganda) (MEMD). 🤝Multilevel governance dialogue workshop on scaling #cleancooking access to hard-to-reach urban populations was opened by Dr. Brian E. Isabirye, Renewable Energy Department Commissioner at MEMD who reaffirmed the Government of Uganda’s commitment to improving clean cooking access and noted the need for implementation of appropriate policies to improve access to clean cooking in #informalsettlements. This address was followed by a commitment from Ms Nandawula Lydia from the British High Commission, Kampala to continue to support the goal of transitioning 50% of Ugandans to cleaner cooking by 2025. 🌱 Site visit to a carbonised biomass briquette and improved cookstove production facility in Mukono. Where Green Bio Energy and Wana Energy Solutions hosted delegates, providing a tour of the production processes for both #briquettes and improved cookstoves. It was heartwarming to see that majority of the workers were #youths and #women. An overarching theme brought into focus this week was the need to target informal settlements with ongoing awareness of clean cooking benefits. The discussion highlighted costs involved and government's role as a champion, with commitments from both business and government to collaborate on these efforts.
