Today, we're proud to launch our National Centre for Preterm Birth Research. 📢 1 in 13 babies born in the UK are premature, meaning thousands of families are affected each year. We know the impact premature birth can have on families, and that more needs to be done to stop babies being born too soon. Our new centre will support families just like Louise's, who has kindly shared her story in this powerful film marking this milestone moment for us. The centre will bring leading experts together for the first time to conduct ground-breaking research to reduce the rate of premature birth in the UK, making sure everyone gets the care they need, and giving the next generation a better start in life. Without the generous support from our community, who go the extra mile to help us raise the funds we need to make the breakthroughs of the future, our research would not be possible. "When I emailed work I specifically said, ‘I don’t want you to think you can’t talk to me or each other about this.’ It was my way of saying, please acknowledge him and please feel that you can contact me to talk about it." After a heartbreaking miscarriage at 7 weeks, Rosie's next pregnancy ended in loss when her son Patrick was stillborn. Rosie says being supported by her workplace made a real difference, and her maternity leave gave her time to go through the stages of grief. In 2007, Rosie gave birth to another son, Hugo, followed by Jonty 5 years later. Rosie has also now published a book, called It's Life, Patrick, talking about her experiences of grief and loss. Thank you, Rosie, for sharing your story. Read more: https://bit.ly/3xOD2Gg For information and support after stillbirth, please visit: https://bit.ly/36Ev4hT

Today, we're proud to be teaming up with Stylist Magazine as they launch the #EveryLossCounts campaign. Stylist will be working with us to: - Amplify the conversation around baby loss. - Call on the Government to improve maternity care in the UK. - Urge the Government to officially count miscarriages, so we know the scale of the problem. - Make workplaces more empathetic, by helping sign businesses up to our Pregnancy and Parenting at Work programme. We look forward to working side by side with Stylist over the next few months and can't wait to see the campaign grow. Find out more: https://bit.ly/3Lujiee #TogetherWeCan

"The feelings of loss and grief during a miscarriage or in the midst of infertility battles are horrendous. But, you're not alone so speak up and reach out.” Kelly and Tim had a difficult journey to get pregnant, and had a heartbreaking chemical pregnancy in 2021. After their loss, and a 2nd failed round of IVF, Kelly got pregnant again. And although their pregnancy wasn't worry-free, at 37 weeks, rainbow baby Benjamin was born: "He truly is our perfect little rainbow after a long, horrific storm.” Last year, to help us fund research to bring more rainbow babies into the world, Kelly and Benjamin took on the Rainbow Challenge. They walked around their local area dressed in their brightest clothing, spotting the colours of the rainbow as they went. And, they raised a fantastic £130 for us - thank you! 🌈 Sign up to the Rainbow Challenge now: https://bit.ly/4bMssNC It's only thanks to our wonderful donors and fundraisers' support we're able to continue funding our lifesaving research. No matter how big or small your challenge or your fundraising total - it all counts and we're so grateful.

We know the language used is very important when talking to your healthcare team about baby loss. But, very little is known about the impact language has on someone's experiences of care after loss. A research project by Dr Beth Malory at University College London aims to help us understand how language is used and its impact during this very challenging time. Express your interest in taking part via this short survey: https://bit.ly/4dV1xBL You’ll also have the chance to take part in a 1-hour focus group. If you're struggling after loss, please know we're here for you. You can find our information and support resources online whenever you need them: https://bit.ly/2MmM3OQ

“Behind each of these figures is a family devastated by baby loss." Our Chief Exec Kath Abrahams has described new data on stillbirth and neonatal deaths as “sobering and unacceptable”. The ‘state of the nation’ report, published by MBRRACE-UK, looks at data between 1 January and 31 December 2022. The report found while stillbirth rates decreased across the UK, the number of neonatal deaths within the first 28 days of birth had increased. Data also showed 3/4 of neonatal deaths were among premature babies. Worryingly, the report found there are still wide inequalities by ethnicity and deprivation: - The neonatal death rate for babies born in the most deprived areas of the UK is now twice as high as the rate in the least deprived.  - Among babies of Asian ethnicity rates of neonatal death have been increasing since 2020. - Babies of Black ethnicity are still more than twice as likely to be stillborn than babies of White ethnicity. Our Chief Executive, Kath says: "Everyone deserves the same opportunities for a healthy pregnancy and birth and should be provided with the best care and support. This should not be predetermined by postcode or ethnicity. “Frankly, we are not on track to meet the current ambitions to make pregnancy and birth safe for all women and birthing people and to save babies’ lives. We are calling on the new Labour Government to commit to renew and enhance these targets.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3LkbWd1

One year on ⏰ A year ago today, we welcomed Maria Caulfield, then Minister for Women, to our National Centre for Miscarriage Research in Birmingham. Together with our Ambassador Myleene Klass and Olivia Blake MP, Maria met with experts and families to find out about our research to change the miscarriage story. Since the visit, we've had a change of Government and we now have a new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting MP. We’re also waiting to hear about the appointment of the new Minister for Women. So for those new to Tommy's, here's a quick recap of all the progress achieved over the past 12 months: - The Pregnancy Loss Review was published, including almost all of our recommendations to Government. The Government then renewed its commitment to improve care for all, including making sure no one has to go through 3 miscarriages in a row before they can access care and support. - The 3 month trial of our Graded Model of Care took place in Birmingham, with the previous Government committing the review the findings from the pilot. We hope the new Government will take this into account when creating their plans for miscarriage care. - The Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) created a Pregnancy Loss Ministerial Oversight Group, which includes our Chief Executive Kath and Prof Arri Coomarasamy. Together, we're making progress for families going through pregnancy and loss. But there's so much more to be done. We look forward to working with the new Government and Health Secretary Wes Streeting MP to continue our work to make pregnancy and birth safe - for everyone.
