Children’s enjoyment of reading has hit a crisis point. Last year, less than half of children and young people read for pleasure in their spare time – the lowest since records began in 2005. We’re proud to support our charity partner, National Literacy Trust, to address the nation’s literacy crisis by signing the Vision for Literacy Business Pledge 2024 to encourage reading and learning.   We have a huge selection of books from our 10 for £10/€15 deal that children can choose from to keep them inspired, as well as free colouring pages for the little ones in-store! Celebrating World Book Day at The Works! 📚🌎 Yesterday, our teams wholeheartedly embraced the magic of literature! We stepped into the shoes of iconic characters from beloved books, igniting our imaginations and spreading joy throughout the day. 🥳 Our customers loved our reading recommendations and the vibrant energy we brought to the occasion. They also joined us in the literary adventure by sharing their own favorite reads and cherished book characters, creating a delightful exchange of inspiration throughout the day.✨ Inspiring reading is a fundamental part of our purpose at The Works. We believe that every child deserves the magic of storytelling, and has the opportunity to hold a book, turn its pages, and embark on fantastical story adventures. 💛💙📖 #WorldBookDay #LiteracyMatters #TheWorks

Happy International Book Giving Day! 📖 We teamed up with our charity partners National Literacy Trust last Friday, visiting two schools in East Birmingham (The Oaklands Primary and Elms Farm Primary) to donate and distribute picture books to their KS1 classes. They each got to choose 2 books to take home with them with the rest going towards their new libraries. They got crafty and created their own bookmarks and also got to meet our mascot, Dex - he was the star of the show!! Huge thanks to our Birmingham Hub Manager Kyle Turakhia for managing the event, our People Director Debbie Jamieson, and all of the incredible teachers and students involved. Together, we can change life stories! 💛 💙

That's a wrap! 🎁 2023 has been a year full of challenges, but we're so proud of our amazing colleagues for their hard work and dedication. Here's a few things we've achieved this year: 🏆 Placed in the top 25 Big Best Companies to work for 📚 Announced a brand new charity partnership with National Literacy Trust 📽 Created our first ever brand advert 🌳 Set our Net Zero targets and started building our roadmaps 💛 Raised over £200,000 for charities including Mind, Cancer Research UK (CRUK), and National Literacy Trust 📈 Grew our Together loyalty scheme to over two million active members 🚀 Launched our own brand label, Playworks, and increased our market share in adult fiction books 🏬 Opened 12 new stores, relocated 4, and completed 25 refits 👩⚕️ Began a trial to offer a virtual GP service to our colleagues through Retail Trust These are just a handful of the achievements we're really proud of this year, and we can't wait to see what 2024 brings.
