Day 1 of 3: This week, we are building our Divya washing machines in Benton Harbor, USA, with our partner Whirlpool Corporation (Foundation). Thanks to their support, we can build a machine every five minutes! Do you know what's even more amazing? These Divya washing machines are all built by Whirlpool Corporation employees through their volunteering hours!

Alleviating the burden of unpaid labour. Empowering women with the time to take charge over their lives.
About us
60% of the world’s population handwash clothes. If there is access, infrequent electricity and water supplies ensure washing machines are not a sustainable option. The Washing Machine Project is a grassroots social enterprise dedicated to alleviating the burden of handwashing clothes and the often unconsidered consequences this unpaid labour has on people’s lives. We have a solution. Using our engineering and product design expertise, we seek to provide a single, standalone, off-the-grid washing solution that is affordable, portable, and accessible to everyone. We take a user-centred approach and constantly look to improve our design for the needs of the communities we provide for. Our experience in International Development has taught us the importance of sustainable solutions. We believe our product will revolutionise the WASH Sector. By providing refugees and indigent citizens with an alternative to handwashing, we are saving communities time, water, and energy as well as mitigating the associated health risks. Importantly, we want to allow people greater agency in their lives. Over the last 2 years, we have had the opportunity to survey the washing habits of vulnerable people in 11 different countries, including India, Lebanon, and the Philippines, and we are currently in the process of fulfilling orders for our 'Divya Two' model to be sent to refugee camps in Iraq and Jordan. Our team is always growing and we have gained a lot of traction. We have the support of organisations such as The United Nations and Oxfam and have featured on platforms like the BBC and in The Guardian. 2023 is shaping up to be a busy year for us and we hope to travel the globe further to relieve communities the burden of this unpaid labour. We hope you support us on this journey. Together, let’s engineer a more sustainable future.

🧢💙 Walk For Water 2024 💙🧢 Last week, The Washing Machine Project team was joined by some fantastic colleagues from the RS London office to take part in the Walk For Water 2024! 🚶♀️🚶♂️ We walked 6km—the average distance that 14 million women and 3 million children in sub-Saharan Africa travel every day in search of water for their families. It was a great day, but also a powerful reminder of the daily struggles faced by so many around the world. Here's Hugo to explain more...

We recently completed a field research trip in to two locations in Mexico, where we gained valuable insights into the laundry practices of local communities. We focused on understanding the tools that used for laundry, the cultural context surrounding clothes washing, and collected visual data to get a clear picture of their context. This groundwork is crucial as we move towards identifying users for our upcoming pilot. We're excited to share that this will pave the way for a full distribution in collaboration with the Whirlpool Corporation (Foundation) later on this year! #reclaimtimeimprovelives #timesaverlifechanger #thewashingmachineproject #whirlpoolfoundation

What a July we had at The Washing Machine Project 👀 Here's some of the highlights from the past month: 🚀 100 Washing Machines built with Whirlpool Volunteers Whirlpool Corporation (Foundation) built 100 washing machines in one week - and smashed a daily record, with 38 machines built in one day. 💡 We held an R&D Design Ideation session with 25 volunteers, generating 500+ post-it notes of ideas over 3 days. 🛠️ Redesigned our R&D space. It is looking beautiful! 🧺 We held our first RS Americas Wash Day in Philadelphia, which was a huge success. 🌎 We're currently conducting field research in Mexico, gaining insights into the needs of local communities before our pilot and full distribution with Whirlpool Foundation later in the year! 📦 We successfully shipped 100 washing machines to Republic of Congo. 🎉 We shared user impact stories and progress at the RS Group plc BBQ Day in Corby. 🎤 We delivered a keynote speech on our impact and innovation at the Ripple Effect Conference (Yewande Akinola MBE FIET HonFREng) 🌟 We welcomed Flora Edmiston, our new Partnership Manager. 🎊 Celebrated two-year anniversaries with TWMP for two of our team members. Congratulations Sean and Laura! Thank you to everyone involved. Here's to an amazing August! #onewashatatime

We love taking The Divya Washing Machine everywhere, and September won't be any different! 💙 The Washing Machine Project and Whirlpool Corporation (Foundation) are heading to New York City from September 16th to 20th! 🍎 We've got some incredible events already lined up with amazing institutions. But we want to maximise our time in the Big Apple and we need your help! During our visit, we're looking to meet and collaborate with universities, humanitarian organisations, NGO's, arts institutions and other communities in New York. We’re particularly interested in: 💡 Presenting talks, discussions, or workshops about TWMP + Whirlpool, it's story and impact. 💡 Sharing insights into the intersection of engineering, humanitarianism, and social entrepreneurship. 💡 Exploring new opportunities to amplify our impact. Do you know of any events, talks, or New York-based opportunities we should attend? We’re eager to connect with like-minded individuals, organisations, and communities passionate about innovation and making a global impact. Shout outs and recommendations are very welcome! 💡🌍 Drop your suggestions in the comments or DM us directly. We can’t wait to hear from you!
