A community of legal professionals on a mission to support older and vulnerable people with the right legal advice.

About us

The Association of Lifetime Lawyers was founded in 1996 to make sure that when people are vulnerable, they have access to a legal professional with the skills and experience to help. Because when people don’t have access to specialist legal advice, the impact for them and their loved ones can be devastating. We’re a community of likeminded professionals committed to delivering the best outcomes for older and vulnerable clients throughout their life. As a member, you’ll benefit from: • Accreditation • Our friendly forum • News alerts on important developments and changes • Resources and best practice guides • A broad training programme • Regional events • Annual conference • Tools for promotion • Business referrals • Voicing concerns to government/legal bodies • Campaigns to improve the legal rights of older and vulnerable people. Our members say it best: “The Association of Lifetime Lawyers offers some brilliant tools and resources, like the Forum, Court of Protection and LPA packs. In fact, I’d say I rely on the resources." “If you’re not an Accredited Lifetime Lawyer then you’re only half ready to practice.”

  • Last week Melinda Giles, Accredited Lifetime Lawyer and Partner and Head of Private Client at Giles Wilson Solicitors, appeared as a guest on BBC Radio 4’s MoneyBox to discuss Lasting Power of Attorneys. Here are our top three takeaways from this conversation about LPAs: 1. It’s important to put yourself in a position where you can choose a person you trust to have control of your finances or health decisions when the time comes. 2. If you don’t have loved ones to appoint as a Power of Attorney for you, you can appoint a professional, like a Solicitor, to take on this role. 3. If you have concerns about loved ones being exploited by LPAs, you can take your concerns to the Office of the Public Guardian, outlining what’s happening and what evidence you have. If they find that something is happening that shouldn’t be, they will investigate, and may even go to the Court of Protection to have the Power of Attorney taken away. Putting an LPA in place is an important step as you get older, and it’s sensible to think about this whilst you are still in full control of your decisions. If you need to consult a solicitor about preparing an LPA for a loved one, find a local Lifetime Lawyer here: https://lnkd.in/e7uD92CQ

  • Co-op Funeralcare has partnered with Channel 4 to launch a social-first series designed to shift the conversation around funerals.    Celebrity Send-Off, a three-part series, took celebrity duos and had them plan each other’s funerals.    Research shows that whilst 66% of people have thought about their funeral preferences, only 7% feel comfortable enough to talk about them.    Mainstream entertainment channels covering these potentially difficult and daunting topics helps to normalise the conversation around funerals and remove the wider stigma around death. The show demonstrates that even your closest family members may not know your wishes for after you pass.   We would encourage everyone to be having these conversations with family and friends. The three-part series is available on Channel 4’s Youtube: https://lnkd.in/dcNYWPjS

    Legal Director and Solicitor

What a morning! I attended the BBC studio in Nottingham to speak live on BBC4 Moneybox as a Director of The Association of Lifetime Lawyers addressing the difficulties experienced by Court of Protection appointed deputies in using their order with banks. Fantastic experience and I hope the show brings more awareness to the role of a deputy and the complexities surrounding their authority and decision making.
