Connecting the future
About us
The Payments Association (previously the Emerging Payments Association or EPA) is for payments firms, big & small. We help our members navigate a complex regulatory environment and facilitate profitable business partnerships. Our purpose is to empower the most influential community in payments, where the connections, collaboration and learning shape an industry that works for all. We operate as an independent representative for the industry and its interests, and drive collaboration within the payments sector in order to bring about meaningful change and innovation. We work closely with industry stakeholders such as the Bank of England, the FCA, HM Treasury, the Payment Systems Regulator, Pay.UK, UK Finance and Innovate Finance. Through our comprehensive programme of activities for members and with guidance from an independent Advisory Board of leading payments CEOs, we facilitate the connections and build the bridges that join the ecosystem together and make it stronger. These activities include a programme of monthly digital and face-to-face event, including the industry leading PAY360 event and PAY360 Awards dinner, CEO round tables and training activities. We run 7 stakeholder working groups: Inclusion, Regulator, Financial Crime, Cross-Border, ESG and Open Banking. The volunteers within these groups represent the collective view of The Payments Association members at industry-critical moments and work together to drive innovation in these areas. We also conduct exclusive industry research which is made available to our members through our Insights knowledge base. These include monthly whitepapers, insightful interviews and tips from the industry’s most successful CEOs.

As financial crimes become more complex, payment firms are tackling threats driven by technological advancements, like AI-generated fraud and social media exploitation. In 2023, the most prevalent types of fraud included identity fraud and facility takeovers. The Financial Crime 360 State of the Industry Survey 2024, involving 150 participants from 32 countries, highlights the continued concern of fraud, particularly identity fraud, and the increasing investment in AI and machine learning for fraud prevention. These insights are crucial for payment firms navigating this dynamic and demanding environment. Members can read the full breakdown from TPA editor Benjamin David, Jane Jee Clarinda Woodford, Sally Felton, Andrew Churchill, Alison McDowell, Matt Clare, Dr Mark Goldspink in this month's #PaymentsIntelligence here: https://lnkd.in/ev3phnSV #insight #financialcrime #fraud #payments #financialservices

The payment operations sector faces challenges as card payment revenues shrink due to capped interchange fees. In the EU, interchange fees for debit cards are capped at 0.2% and for credit cards at 0.3%, significantly lower than the previous rates of 0.5-2.0% before the Interchange Fee Regulations of 2015. Card issuers must find ways to reduce their operational costs to maintain profitability. This could involve streamlining payment processes, automating various operations, and leveraging technology to enhance efficiency. However, implementing automation and advanced technologies often requires significant upfront investment. TPA members can read our reporter, George Iddenden's breakdown in this month's Fatemeh Nikayin, PhD, Thomas Müller and payabl. Igor Skachkov https://lnkd.in/ewNXiUUk

💡 The payment services providers (#PSPs) community is on the brink of significant regulatory changes due in October 2024, as the Payment Systems Regulator (PSR) enforces new rules under the authorised push payment (#APP) fraud reimbursement policy. This policy aims to combat the escalating issue of APP fraud, where victims are tricked into authorising payments to criminals. According to UK Finance, Britons lost approximately £459.7 million to APP fraud in 2023, highlighting the urgent need for robust protective measures. 🔗 TPA editor Benjamin David examines October 2024's APP fraud reimbursement policy changes and their impacts on payments firms here: https://lnkd.in/ehU4nqGm @
