About us
A modern institution with a long and distinguished history, Middle Temple is a place of many parts. First and foremost, Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of Court which have the exclusive right to Call students to the Bar. The education and training of advocates lie at the heart of the Inn, but we are also a professional society for our membership worldwide; and we maintain a heritage estate in central London housing chambers from which barristers practise. Several important activities support Middle Temple’s core functions. In addition to teaching, training and the management of the Inn’s property portfolio, these include the provision of around £1 million per year in support of our students and other junior members; the running of a modern Law library and an historic archive; the oversight (with Inner Temple) of the historic Temple Church; and the management of a commercial events business. All of these activities represent the 21st century Middle Temple, but training and education will always be at its core. Middle Temple’s membership comprises students, barristers and senior members of the Bar and Judiciary. Members of the Inn’s Governing Body (Parliament) are known as Masters of the Bench. The Chairman is the Treasurer, who is elected each year for a 12-month period of office. The Chief Executive, who is a full-time permanent member of the Inn’s staff, is the Under Treasurer. A staff of 90 permanent employees assist the Under Treasurer with the day-to-day management and operation of the Inn, along with part-time staff who support our corporate events.

Vengalil Krishna Kurup Krishna Menon had a vibrant career in London following his Call to the Bar in 1934. He was an Indian independence activist, founding the Indian League which was an unofficial embassy for British-Occupied India. Menon was also elected as a Labour councillor for the Borough of St Pancras between 1934 and 1947. During the Second World War, he was an air raid warden in Camden and was made an Honorary Freeman for his contribution to the local area. On 26 January 1950, Menon became the First High Commissioner of the Republic of India. Outside of the legal and political sphere, he was the founding editor of Pelican Books, an imprint of Penguin Books. #SouthAsianHeritageMonth

During the Victorian period, Joseph Dale F.R.H.S. served as the Inn's gardener – he tended to the gardens here for over twenty years. He was known for his impressive displays of chrysanthemums and wrote several publications on gardens, which were highly publicised. In 1858 (the same year as this engraving of the gardens was produced) the London Evening Standard reported that he took 'great trouble in explaining to visitors the many varieties of the flower and mode of cultivation to produce the immense blooms’. In the 1851 census he is recorded as residing with his wife, Maria, and five children at the Inn's Gardener’s Lodge.

Dudley Shelton Senanayake was Called to the Bar at the Inn in 1934. Soon after, he returned to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to work as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Ceylon. In 1947, Senanayake was elected to the first parliament of independent Ceylon and in 1952 he was appointed the second Prime Minister of Ceylon. He would be elected three times as Prime Minister, in 1957 and 1965 – his legacy would be his policies focused on agricultural reforms. #SouthAsianHeritageMonth

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden death of our much loved and respected Treasurer, Master Paul Darling, OBE, KC. Paul died on Friday in Middle Temple, a place he loved. For over forty years he was a constant in every part of the Inn. Throughout that time, he worked selflessly and tirelessly for the good of others and the Inn, most recently as a wonderful Treasurer. He will be very much missed by us all. We extend our deepest condolences to Paul’s wife, Camilla, and his broader family at this very difficult time. Details of a funeral and Memorial Service will be announced in due course. Master Kate Thirlwall
