It was really good to attend the Reach Events celebratory event for the community Grocer due to open in September. A massive well done to Karina Martin Mst and Chipper Betts, Gillian Davel (Manager), Mareliese Welgemoed, Adam Davies and the team. It is a brilliant initiative that will not only help provide food to those who need it but will give people new skills and a community to be part of. Karina stated that 23,000 children in Derby - equating to around two in five - are suffering from child poverty and are struggling for daily essentials. So it shows there is such a real need for the grocers. It will be a lovely environment, like a farm shop, and it won't be means tested and will be £5 to join with £6 to shop and this will give each person around £30 of groceries. If you can contribute either by time to help the customers with developing skills, for example, interview skills, CV writing etc or can make a financial, please contact Gillian Davel on here or email gillian@reachcommunitygrocers.org. Sadly people need this help and it’s wonderful to hear the support they have already received from the local business community. I didn’t take enough photos! But captured the lovely Richard Yeo of ACI Commercial interiors who provided the flooring and Star Refrigeration who will be installing the fridges. In a typical summer month, the north Peruvian town of Suyo spends 72% of its month without energy. In their only hospital, this spells disaster: without reliable energy, basic medical care can’t operate, vaccines go to waste, and the health of the population detoriates. This June, I joined EcoSwell to help install reliable & clean energy to this hospital. My most critical role was to design the energy distribution system: carrying energy from PV Panels to lights and sockets. After reviewing the national code and carrying out the relevant analysis, I proposed key protection equipment and safe wiring schemes. With this information and the help of new volunteers, the medical post will be fully operational within the next two months. Our Renewables Team also spent a lot of time in the field: maintaining and fixing pre-existing infrastructure in Talara and Lobitos. I gained key technical skills working on equipment including inverters, PV panels and solar optimisers. My single proudest moment was fixing a system fault in the Talara medical post which was causing nightly blackouts. From a soft skills perspective, the trip was monumental. I was responsible for managing a small team in the field; sticking to time, budget and safety standards in the Suyo design project; and communicating my findings with a variety of colleagues and stakeholders. I have a huge thank you to extend to the organisations who very generously funded the project: the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), The Wood Foundation, Star Refrigeration and the University of Strathclyde. Rest assured your money has gone a long way. I also had a little time to explore the vast country: the rainforests of Canchaque, the beaches of Lobitos and the mountains of Cusco. It’s been some Summer. Here’s hoping I’m coming back to a somewhat sunny Scotland!!

🌟 Great Weekend at Extreme E! 🌟 Billy Connolly once said, “There are two seasons in Scotland: June and Winter.” Well, this July felt more like winter, but that didn’t stop us from having a blast! ❄️❤️ 🏎️🌿 Not only did we witness heart-pounding races, but we also had the privilege of meeting the Sainz family, rally drivers, and the brilliant minds behind the scenes. The way they set up the site with temporary power and leave no trace behind is truly remarkable. 🙌 Extreme E’s commitment to sustainability is inspiring. Charity Event for Ryan Connell Foundation (Rouken Glen Glasgow), includes Pitch side DJ and a food truck serving pizza, pasta and pakora on the day. This has been an fantastic event for the last years, and hoping to build on prior years to make this one to remember! The football is one part of it and this is also an inclusive event, so bring along pets, kids, partners, friends who would enjoy the social aspect too!
