This week, I had the pleasure of attending the 15th Real Estate Development Summit | Saudi Arabia Edition, an event filled with valuable insights shared by fantastic speakers. One highlight was learning from Peter’s Cook principles, emphasizing that a building should have a clear idea, be memorable, work in common sense, and feel good. I couldn't agree more with these principles. During these days, I had the opportunity to connect with remarkable individuals from Saudi Arabia and few other parts of the world. Their warm welcome left a lasting impression, and I'm excited that I will be visiting Saudi Arabia again in August. #redseurope2024 #reds2024 #15redsummit #redsummit #gbbventure #realestate #construction #development #luxury #interior #designers #hotel #hospitality #commercialconstruction #residentialrealestate #interiordesigner #tourism #saudiarabia #architects #networking #face2facemeetings #b2bevents

We are pleased to share that our recently completed One Twenty King’s Road development for Crosstree Real Estate Partners LLP has been shortlisted for a Brick Award in the Commercial category. Occupying a prime position on King’s Road, Chelsea, the new mixed-use development reuses 68% of the existing building’s structure to create the missing centrepiece to Royal Avenue on axis with The Royal Hospital. The design integrates vertical brick bays and double-height window arches to harmonise with the local context, emphasizing sustainability through features including reclaimed London Stock bricks and a living vertical wall, contributing to Chelsea’s architectural landscape. Winners will be announced at the ceremony in November – good luck to all the finalists! #brickawards #sustainabledesign #londonarchitects

"Despite the use of digital tech, craft-based makers are still at the heart of the design process." Modelshop director Beth Mills spoke with RIBA Journal about whether physical model making in architecture is a dying art, explaining how our approach - which integrates new technologies and enhances creativity while preserving the essence of craftsmanship - brings designs to life in ways that AI renders cannot match. Beth shares how many clients still appreciate the tactile experience of physical models, which offer unique insights and a tangible connection to the design process. Our lunch break looked a little different yesterday, with our annual practice visit to the Serpentine Pavilion. We were inspired by the space created by Korean architect Minsuk Cho. Unlike previous years, where designs often emerged as a singular structure, Cho took a different approach, creating an open space surrounded by five unique 'islands' inspired by traditional Korean houses: The Play Tower, Teahouse, Library, Gallery, and Auditorium. These elements connect to various residential quarters and everyday activities. #Serpentine #Pavilion #HydePark #KoreanArchitecture

Thought leaders from across the hospitality sector recently joined us in the Dome at The Department Store for our first Dome Discussions roundtable, posing the question: How do you create an identity for the hotel experience? Now more than ever, modern travellers seek a guest experience that's individual to the place they are staying in and feeds into their wider experience of a destination. How can design be used to create a distinctive hotel experience, and how do you strike a balance between creating unique, location-specific experiences for guests and maintaining consistent brand standards? Sharing trends and experiences from the hotel industry, the conversation addressed questions including: - Should hotels relate to place or is the brand more powerful? - What are the driving factors behind selecting a hotel brand and a designer for a site? - Is offering guest facilities to the local community a trend that’s here to stay? - Does retrofitting buildings compromise or provide opportunities for hotel design? With thanks to speakers Daniel Blaker, Hamish Kilburn, Kiernan Moriarty, Leon Warner, Marc Finney, Maria Cheung, Nesrine Tourqui, Philip Camble, Tazie Taysom, William Aitken and moderator Murray Levinson for facilitating such an engaging conversation to kick-off the first in our roundtable series. “We saw it as a chance to treat the building more like a living museum, where we could go back through the steps, and piece together the process of making the cruciform.” Space House London features in the latest edition of Concrete Quarterly, published by The Concrete Centre. As the sensitive refurbishment of the Grade II-listed building – originally designed by Richard Seifert and Partners – approaches completion, Nick Jones interviewed the project team including Partner Tim Gledstone about the rich history of this brutalist icon and the design team’s aim to balance the building’s past and future. Our unique Japanese teahouse, designed in collaboration with TOTO Europe UK, is now open in their London gallery and showroom until 31 July. In celebration of TOTO's summer exhibition ‘Technology Meets Tradition’, we designed a teahouse that builds on our love of craft and contextual design, to be shared and enjoyed by exhibition visitors. Our teahouse presents a contemporary interpretation of the revered Japanese teahouse. While traditional designs typically use rice paper, our structure features metal mesh tapestry inspired by seigaiha waves from Hiragane, a Kyoto-based ancient weaving company. The comfort of this space creates a calming sanctuary, providing visitors with a retreat from the fast pace of life. Designed in partnership with our long term collaborator and friends at CIPANGO who enabled us to discover this range of inspiring crafted materials. Gareth Gardner #totouk #Londonexhibitions
