Oxford Street became the post-Covid poster child for the wrongs of high street retail and fractured, multi-ownership models. With no-one taking control of the famous shopping thoroughfare the market opted for anarchy, with American Candy stores as a space filling solution, solving empty rates issues but leaving everyone else with a sour taste in their mouth. It's taken a lot of work, not least from the Labour administration Westminster City Council which has been much more determined to steer Oxford Street back on course than the previous lame duck council ever was. So no more to the laughable Marble Arch Mount, proudly voted London's worst tourist attraction, and instead initiatives such as the new pop-up scheme which has its four debutant brands ready to go in and around #OxfordStreet in a partnership with Becky Jones and a host of new retailers, plus plans to improve the street further to make it a nicer place to shop. A healthy Oxford Street is vital to the West End and, while it may have taken some time to get there, the tide has definitely turned. Here's my latest for Bisnow https://lnkd.in/dXfCYTvZ

🎀 Now open at 31 Brook Street: Kindred of Ireland 🎀 Brand #3 as part of our project with Westminster City Council to introduce new talent to London's key streets. Kindred make absolutely beautiful, hand-crafted, luxury Irish linen, with customisation available in store. They're already proving to be a huge hit with the Mayfair crowd. Founder Amy set the brand up to continue her family’s linen heritage - after finding an old photo of her grandma Winnie spinning yarn. Amy now runs the brand with husband Joel (plus a team of seamstresses and two small interns 🧒🏼🧒🏼) from their studio in Northern Ireland. Amy and Joel have been an absolute JOY to work with, and we can’t wait to see them have all the success in the world. Please pop in if you’re in the area - look out for the giant bow in the window. Next up! Love Cocoa | B Corp >> 36 South Molton Street James Cadbury is the great-great-great-grandson of John Cadbury (yes, that Cadbury 🍫) and will be opening his own chocolate shop and cafe 200 years after his grandfather first opened a tea and coffee shop in Birmingham. This is very much a chocolate shop for 2024 though. Love Cocoa are a B Corp on a mission to modernise luxury chocolate. Their products are sustainable and made from only the finest, fairest, ingredients 🤍 Can't wait to help James and the Love Cocoa team bring this store to life. It's the first of many, I'm sure! Thanks again to Places for London and Westminster City Council for making this possible, and looking forward to seeing Formroom's designs in action. 👀 Exciting News! Thrilled to announce that Love Cocoa | B Corp is setting up our very own shop, just off the iconic Oxford Street on South Molton Street! This has always been our ambition, and it's incredible to see it coming to life. We're delighted to be working with Someday Studios and Westminster City Council, and TfLs Places for London on this exciting project called Meanwhile On: Oxford Street. We applied to work with Someday Studios and Westminster over a year ago after the legend Mike Freeman tagged us in Aoife Byrne viral Linkedin post about their plan to work with Westminister to clear up candy, vape, souvenir and empty shops stores on Oxford Street and surrounding areas, replacing them with young innovative sustainable brands. Over 1,000 companies applied, and we are fortunate to be one of the first selected, alongside the amazing CANVVS, Kindred of Ireland and HADES. The store will be a nod to our tagline The Modern Chocolatier and can’t wait to show you the progress over the next few months with a target launch date in September. Big shout out to Becky Jones and Aoife who have been fantastic and helped make this wonderful scheme happen, along with John Abbate, Laura Fernie and the Formroom team.

Not one but three new stores coming to Oxford Street ...and beyond 💥 First up: CANVVS >> 373 Oxford Street CANVVS is a creator-first platform for the custom sneaker community 👟, soon to be opening right next to Bond Street Station. They partner with heavyweight brands like Nike, Disney and Marvel to support INSANELY talented up-and-coming artists to create, promote and sell legitimate sneaker art. Look out for artists designing live from the widows of Oxford Street. Their creators have already designed for Ed Sheeran, the Lionesses and the men's England squad - and there are some crazy plans in the pipeline… The store at 373 will be a flagship gallery and lab, and a platform for creators to be supported, promoted & discovered. This one is a BIG design challenge (<500sqft over 3 levels) - over to you, Formroom - but has an incredible billboard-style storefront. Huge shout out to Westminster City Council and Places for London for making this possible.
