SOIF MD Cat Tully has published a new blog sharing more about the UK House of Commons Liaison Committee's visionary new report. Cat writes: "This is the first time that any part of the UK government has had a holistic discussion on how to safeguard the wellbeing of current and next generations. I was one of two Specialist Advisers to the Liaison Committee’s inquiry, and I am thrilled to share some highlights from the Committee’s report, focusing on the parts about governance in times of uncertainty and the protection of democracy for future generations." She shares more about her role contributing expertise in embedding long-term thinking, connecting with global experts and crucially, linking to coalitions of young, diverse people who are pioneering strategic approaches. Special thanks to Sir Bernard Jenkin, Chair of the Liaison Committee and Major General Jonathan Shaw, fellow Specialist Adviser. Their exemplary leadership, alongside the commitment of all committee members and the support from the parliamentary staff, has been crucial to the success of this endeavour. The progressive approach they have outlined not only scrutinises the wellbeing of today’s UK but also that of tomorrow's, catalysing a shift towards governance that robustly integrates the voices of future generations. Explore her commentary on the report and discover how its recommendations could transform UK governance by aligning today's policies with the needs of next generations. About us
The School of Internationals Futures (SOIF) is a not-for-profit consultancy. We exist to help you and your organisation navigate uncertainty and make resilient and better decision in an increasingly uncertain and complex world. There has never been a greater need for long-term thinking. In an increasingly uncertain and volatile world, School of International Futures exists to help organisations use foresight to impact decision-making today. We can help you think differently – and confidently – about the future, and to develop the skills and insight you need to impact decision-making today. Foresight is not about predicting the future, but understanding your current and future operating environment. Insights gained from foresight equip organisations to recognise and respond to emerging threats and opportunities by developing enhanced competitiveness, resilience and agility. For foresight to have impact, it needs to be conceived from the outset with the decision-maker, policy-maker, or other client of the work in mind. SOIF’s practical four-stage approach – Scoping, Ordering uncertainty, Implications and Integrating Futures – and learning journey helps us design and teach foresight that can be used to impact decision-making today. Great to see this kind of network analysis: building connected community is critical to a resilient and sustained foresight efforts and movement. 🎉The Aotearoa New Zealand Futures Network Map - a project we started last year to map the futures ecosystem here in New Zealand is now updated and live 🎉 It's really hard to make sense of a system you can't see. 🕸️#ComplexSystems involve multiple components and connections that can be overwhelming to understand through text alone. Visualising a system can be super helpful, providing the infrastructure to help you engage with and navigate that system… I hope that this helps with that! 🌏🚀 ---- Last year, we published the first version of this map to identify who is working in the futures ecosystem and how they collaborate. Since then, my Speculative Futures Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland co-founder, Jade Tang-Taylor and I have spent time activating and energising parts of the system that needed it, particularly in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, where we’re based 🌱 Then, over the past few months, together with my amazing collaborator Howard Lange (whose technical mahi brought this map to life) we gathered data to update and understand changes in the network. The results show significant growth and some surprising developments 📈 You can read some analysis of this, including a “before and after” comparison in an article we’ll share in August. There is still work to do and much more to learn but the map version 2 is now up, free (and fun) to explore. You'll find the link in the comments. Disclaimer - “all models are wrong, some are useful”. It's a great line from statistician George Box making the point that we should focus more on whether something can be applied to everyday life in a useful manner rather than debating endlessly if it is correct in all cases 🧐 It very much applies to this model!💫💫💫 #AotearoaFutures #DesignforImpact #Networks Cheryl Doig Emily Sharp Kate Sutton Ben Reid Ed Morrison Sohail Inayatullah Eman Ebed Alkadi Wendy McGuinness Josie McGuinness Phil Balagtas

Recently, our Summit of the Future Pledge Network, an informal collective of more than 100 cross-disciplinary leaders, convened for monthly updates and insights from around the world: 🔴 We celebrated our recent successes from the Pledge Network across different regions - we heard about Kenneth Nsah (Mala), PhD championing the government of Cameroon, Valeria Colunga, Abril C., Marimer Baltazar and Mercedes Baltazar Lobato in starting a civil society coalition in Mexico, and James Balzer, MSusDev MPP, Cheryl Doig, Daouia Chalali, Deyanira J M., developing an intergenerational fairness evaluation framework for city governments' policies in Melbourne. 🔴 We received a comprehensive update on the Summit of the Future agenda and the current state of the Declaration on Future Generations. 🔴 We heard insightful deep dives about intergenerational thinking in New Zealand and the upcoming Finnish Youth Summit of the Future - many thanks to Thomas Blakie and Paula Pättikangas. 🔴 We hosted practical workshops on how to engage with NYC missions, mobilising cities and Ministries of Foreign Affairs. A round of applause for our Pledge members moving the needle in their countries! What can you do to galvanise more action? ➡ Reach out to your Member States. Prof Thomas Hale of Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, and Cat Tully of School of International Futures (SOIF) write for our site about how government can better address "long problems" such as climate change or our aging society – and how its failure to do so is fuelling disillusionment with democracy.

As we countdown to #UKGE2024: Politicians are promising a better tomorrow. The future of democracy depends on their ability to deliver it "Whoever is elected on 4 July should turn the future from a campaign slogan into a plan of action. 🔸 They can start with the Liaison Committee’s recommendations around a Parliamentary Committee for the future, upgrades to the government's strategic planning capacity, and reviewing legislation for intergenerational fairness, among other measures. 🔸 But we can also go further and consider a national Future Generations Act or other measures to hardwire real incentives to serve the long-term interest into the machinery of policymaking. 🔸 Crucially, this agenda must connect with the people and their daily concerns, perhaps through an intergenerational national dialogue to capture a collective vision of the UK that we’d be happy to leave behind for our children and all those who come after." Professor Thomas Hale from Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford and I wrote about the failure to address long-term problems & give people a meaningful future which is contributing to decline in confidence in democracy - and how to address it. It refers to the important report on strategic thinking in Whitehall by the UK House of Commons Liaison Committee - a senior bipartisan committee - on this very topic.
