SIBA, the Society of Independent Brewers and Associates, was established in 1980 to represent the interests of the growing number of independent breweries in Britain. SIBA was instrumental in campaigning for Progressive Beer Duty (PBD), which came into place in 2002. This beer duty system allows smaller breweries to pay less tax on their products and has led to an explosion of new breweries in the last decade. PBD still plays a major role in the Britain’s vibrant beer market. SIBA’s membership survey recently highlighted how important PBD is to their business with 70% stressing that PBD in at least its current format is ’vital’ to their business, with an additional 24% highlighting this as ‘very important’ or ‘important’. SIBA currently represents more than 825 independent craft breweries and our vision is ‘to deliver the future of British beer and become the voice of British brewing.’ What is SIBA trying to achieve? SIBA launched a three year Strategic Plan in March 2015. To help achieve the vision ‘to deliver the future of British beer and become the voice of British brewing’, SIBA highlighted four strategic aims: Promote and campaign for our members Provide and enhance commercial opportunities Grow and develop our membership Develop our capability It is paramount for SIBA to increase its number of brewing members. This improved representation of the independent beer market will help the association have more influence when lobbying politicians. SIBA BeerFlex scheme creates and manages flexible solutions for the on and off-trade that achieve access to market for the SIBA membership. An excerpt from my quote in The Drinks Business today: “Purchasing UK-grown hops is an excellent way for independent breweries to reduce their carbon footprint and work towards a more sustainable future for the industry. Traditionally English hops were very different to American or new World Hops and offered a more subtle, spicy or peppery character to beers – whereas imported hops offered much bigger citrus and tropical fruit aromas and flavours – but the huge strides in UK hop development means there are now a number of varieties that offer superb modern aromatic qualities without the airmiles.” https://lnkd.in/enZJeJwT

Independents need a big voice SIBA, The Society of Independent Brewers and Associates represents the interests of independent beer and brewing. Its a dynamic and energetic sector with a diverse audience group. SIBA needed a rebrand that could resonate with all audiences, represent the variety of work the organisation does, and highlight what brings it all together: independence. SIBA’s membership extends from established traditional brewers, through to experimental craft brewers and into support services for the sector. Their work on policy successfully influences at the highest level too, impacting the regulations and legislation that effect the industry every day. The rebrand was been months in the making before being presented at BeerX, the UK’s biggest annual conference for the independent beer sector. The roll out of the new brand has just started and we can’t wait to see the impacts. Feedback is already very positive. The recent launch of the new SIBA, The Society of Independent Brewers and Associates brand at BeerX was the final stage in a year-long process involving multiple working groups (brewers, directors, non-execs), the Board, SMT and Executive. Its been a labour of love, but I’m really happy with where we ended up, with something genuinely bold and different. Thanks to the Board and Exec Team for their support through this project and being brave enough to resist going the safe route. Exciting news! Today marks the beginning of my new role as Events and Marketing Executive at SIBA, The Society of Independent Brewers. After a successful two and a half years as Brewery Manager at SALT Brewing, I am thrilled to be joining such a prestigious organisation. Despite being sorry to move on from friends, I am looking forward to contributing to the continued success of the SIBA and the new challenges ahead. of course, leaning into my personal work of helping to create a more diverse and inclusive beer industry!
