Shell Foundation seeks clean energy solutions that benefit all, emphasising an inclusive energy transition for both emerging and developed markets, men and women, end customers, and shareholders alike. This principle is highlighted in the latest research paper on the “Role of Carbon Markets” by Triple Line, showcasing how Sistema.bio / Sistema Biobolsa uses carbon finance to subsidise biodigesters for farmers, making them more accessible. The report, commissioned by Sistema and #ShellFoundation with funding from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s CASEE partnership, outlines factors for high-quality, high-impact carbon emissions reduction and income-raising projects, focusing on biogas technology. Sistema’s biodigesters, installed on smallholder farms, turn organic waste like animal dung into clean energy and organic fertiliser. The loss of food to rot after harvest hurts us three ways - food becomes scarcer; farmers become poorer; and the burden on the planet to feed us grows. It's a huge problem: Fully one third of all produce is lost or wasted before reaching consumers. Here's fantastic opportunity to win a $50,000 Innovation Prize to Reduce Post-Harvest Loss for smallholder farmers in emerging markets. It comes courtesy of our long time partner Factor[e] Ventures. Shell Foundation is proud to support innovations that bring clean energy solutions to the challenge of post-harvest loss. In India, over 52% of the population lack access to affordable banking services, specifically affordable finance for clean energy and transport assets that have substantial potential to increase incomes for under-served communities whilst lowering emissions. At an event co-hosted by #ShellFoundation and our partner SIDBI(Small Industries Development Bank of India), we brought together 23 other ecosystem stakeholders. Shell Foundation’s India Director, Business Development, Amrita Sarker, highlighted that through direct work with partners, we have learned that last-mile customer financing is a key challenge for scale up of suppliers of clean energy assets and adopters of e-mobility. To address this, Shell Foundation focuses on productive energy use and innovative financing mechanisms such as the potential Risk Sharing Facility. This Facility would aim to de-risk the sector, but also aims for positive gender outcomes to accelerate clean asset ownership and usage among low-income groups, particularly women. Kofa is an excellent example of how innovation leads to a green transition that works for all. Kofa’s swappable battery technology was first rolled out for motorcycles in #Ghana to replace combustion engine motorcycles. Their swappable batteries are good for more than motorcycles. They're being rolled out to power productive use appliances for small business and homes. Each one replaces a diesel generator, a dirty and expensive source of power widely used across Africa. Shell Foundation with co-funding from Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through the Transforming Energy Access platform, invested in Kofa as it changes the way people access clean energy across our urban transporters and microentrepreneurs customer groups. #ShellFoundation continues to invest in, and is seeking, organisations that provide innovative and inclusive clean energy solutions that not only cut emissions, but also raise incomes of our customers. #ImpactInvesting #EnergyAccess #EnergyTransition “
Our partner, Kofa is on a journey to transform Africa’s energy landscape. With funding support from #ShellFoundation and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Kofa’s work is continuing to scale and change the way people access energy across sub-Saharan #Africa. Kofa’s multi-purpose battery network is giving customers access to clean energy and facilitating the #EnergyTransition. It is benefiting transporters and businesses by lowering costs and increasing productivity as well as reducing a substantial amount of CO2. Inclusive energy solutions must raise incomes and cut emissions. #ShellFoundation’s philanthropic capital allows us to strategically partner with governments, multilaterals and the private sector to de-risk new technology and markets and design pilots with potential to scale. This approach is grounded in the idea that for the #EnergyTransition to work for anyone, it must work for everyone: those in developed economies and emerging markets, men and women, end customer and company shareholders. The White House Fact Sheet about Vice President Kamala Harris’ recent announcement regarding public and private sector commitments to advancing digital inclusion in Africa highlights not only Shell Foundation’s partnerships but the blended finance clean energy solutions and gender intentionality we design. We are proud to co-fund, with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through our CASEE partnership, $3.6 million towards our investment with Mastercard and Co-operative Bank of Kenya in SunCulture The investment in SunCulture seeks to provide 100,000 smallholder farmers—including 40,000 women farmers—access to affordable credit to buy clean energy tools that support farmers’ incomes, such as solar-powered irrigation pumps. The program will also prioritise gender-sensitive financial literacy training for farmers. The program aims to create additional economic opportunities by ensuring that at least 70% of the digital field agents working directly with farmers are women. At the Africa CEO Forum 2024 in Kigali, Rwanda last week, #ShellFoundation hosted the “Corporate Pathways to Scale Energy Access” breakfast event. The event brought together innovators, incubators, large business and financial leaders to discuss how to accelerate energy solutions that increase income and cut emissions to create deep, sustainable socio-economic growth. This growth is critical to making the energy transition effective for all, it must serve both emerging and developed markets, women and men, end customers, and company stakeholders. We heard from AFEX's Group CEO Ayodeji Balogun on the need to increase the representation of the people who are affected by the problems we are trying to solve in the design process of solutions. And we heard from several leaders around the need to build partnerships quickly that are risk-adjusted to meet the needs and mandates of multiple actors. The energy transition needs to raise incomes while it lowers emissions. That's not a corporate, banking or philanthropic play alone. It's all of those. Shell Foundation's Chief Programming Officer Richard Gomes is leading our team at The Africa CEO Forum this week to make it work, across the continent and across sectors. We want to bring our knowledge and de-risking capital together with like-minded companies and investors to deliver scalable clean energy solutions and ensure that the #EnergyTransition works for everyone. This means the end customer and business, women and men, financial institutions and investors. See below for some of our current partners in Africa. We are keen to partner with companies and co-investors capable of change at scale. If that's you, please get in touch with the #ShellFoundation team at the #ACF2024 or message Shell Foundation. #ImpactInvesting #CleanEnergy #EnergyAccess
Today, at the #ACF2024 panel session “The Silent P: Adding Philanthropy to Public-Private Partnerships”, #ShellFoundation’s Chief Programme Officer, Richard Gomes, joined other leaders in the sector to discuss how philanthropic organisations can play a convening role between the private and public sectors. Drawing on over 20 years’ experience in developing inclusive energy solutions that are agile, risk-tolerant and customer focused, Richard highlighted that Shell Foundation has: 🔹Improved the lives of more than 274m people across the Global South 🔹Mobilised $9.7 billion of follow-on finance for energy access solutions 🔹Reduced 67.53m tonnes of co2 or co2 equivalent emissions These results have been accomplished through strategic partnerships, like with Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, but there is still much more to be done. Richard emphasised the critical role of partnerships between philanthropies, public, and private actors in achieving rapid scalability providing examples of our partnerships with Mastercard, Co-operative Bank of Kenya and Davis & Shirtliff as proof of bespoke solutions. In closing, Richard stressed that for the #EnergyTransition to work for anyone, it must work for everyone. This means that it must work for the Global North and the Global South, men and women, end customer and company stakeholders.
