Having literally just touched back down to earth from Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, we've been discussing our favourite parts of the frenetic week of events, talks, networking coffees (drinks, mostly...) and award shows. The below are the bits we loved the most: - Wednesday's awards show with a focus on Data, B2B, PR, Media and Social - seriously impressive work from all around the world. We were particularly in awe of The Creative Data Lions winners - VML's Absurd Promises, Leo Burnett's Turf Finder and Area 23's Magnetic Stories - The DIY tie dye Crocs stand at the Pinterest beach - Stagwell's Sportbeach - sure there were some painfully cool sportspeople present (special shoutout to the gentlemen that is DeAndre Hopkins and the hilarious Megan Rapinoe) but the depth of discussions that were had around branding in sports, the way different sports are seeking to address mental health issues within their leagues, the global impact of sport at a community level and the power of athletes as role models and influencers far beyond the sporting element of their career.  - The mini croque monsieur's at Yahoo!'s happy hour - Humour being noted as the current flavour of brave and impactful throughout a number of talks and campaigns across the week and...  - Try as you might to go to any other bar, you will end up at the Carlton Cannes Bar which seems to have the gravitational pull of a small planet Alexandra Corton Richard Savage Sam Corn

Following on from our Agency vs In-House survey around the challenges and positives of both, and as a follow up to the two great articles in PRWeek UK last week, we’ve written a little more around the topic and drawn out some of our observations. We'd love to hear your thoughts.  Whether you’re keen to discuss the findings and how they might apply for you, or looking to better understand how to utilise these findings from an EVP point of view, do get in touch. One of the coolest industry events combined with one of the most amazing places I had the immense privilege of calling home for 18 years... It’s either a match made in heaven or an event happening in Cannes. Excited to be heading to Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity with the rest of the Sapio Consulting gang! Awesome to attend Milltown Partners' event last night for the launch of Madhumita Murgia's brilliant book, Code Dependent, which shines a light on how #AI is infiltrating different parts of society. Thanks to the hosts Ben Novick, Paddy Harverson and Jonathan Lenson. A few interesting insights and take-aways from Madhu's book and interview below: - AI is generally based on historical data sets which are not representative and leads to negative impacts on underrepresented or marginalised peoples. Her research found that in a lot of examples AI was harming the marginalised and benefiting a privileged few. Code Dependent organically ended up focusing mostly on women and people of colour. - A good example of this is that the pain classification system for joint pain and arthritis, the Kellgren and Lawrence System, was created based solely on a small amount of data from mining communities of men from the North of England, but is used Globally and feeds into data that AI uses. - Madhu - ‘Healthcare and science feel like the bright spots of where AI can benefit and save lives.’ - Madhu, whilst researching the book, didn't find anyone in AI from big business who knows where AI is going to go - even those who have created successful LLM models don’t know why they are so successful. The scary bit is that we don’t understand exactly how we get some outputs or what the actual equation is. - Pornography has always been at the cutting edge of technology and helped move it forward, which is what we're now seeing with the use of deep fakes. - AI used currently without a human filter system is causing problems - in the UK Algorithms are currently used, with no human filter, for those on liver transplant lists to decided who gets priority and the algorithm is set to bias to those over 40 meaning those under 40 just aren't going to get one irrespective of their need.
