✍ "This is a complex problem to solve but with a new government comes the opportunity to evaluate and agree what role we want universities to play in filling high-level skills gaps, conducting R&D and supporting business and local communities". Our Policy Manager Lily Bull has been digging into the latest university sector finance data, as the new government embarks on the complex challenge of how to ease the sector's increasing financial pressures and make the most efficient use of public funding. A new report from the GW4 Alliance of universities and the Higher Education Policy Institute today highlights the lack of childcare support available for postgraduate student parents. We are backing the GW4’s call to extend childcare grants, currently available to undergraduates, to postgraduate students - increasing access to higher-level study, improving the research talent pipeline and ultimately building a more diverse research workforce for the UK. Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/eUWiUePp #ICareGW4ChildcareCampaign
📢 Today we publish our #WhoCaresGW4ChildcareCampaign report with the Higher Education Policy Institute, urging the government to extend the Childcare Grant to postgraduate students, improving access to study for economically disadvantaged parents and helping to diversify the research community for the benefit of wider society. 📜 Read the report 'Who cares? How postgraduate parents fall through the gap for government childcare grants, and how to fix it' on our website: buff.ly/3Y7rs3p 📉 Postgraduate students who are parents have been forgotten by previous governments. They are currently ineligible for the childcare grants, available to undergraduate students, and ineligible for the same free-hours entitlements available for workers. This lack of equitable provision disproportionately affects women and those from lower-income communities, hampering efforts to increase the diversity of higher education and the high-skilled workforce. 🚀 Postgraduate studies are critical for the high-skilled jobs of the future, providing upskilling and reskilling opportunities for many career paths, and delivering ambitions for the UK to be a science superpower. 💡 GW4 is therefore calling on the Government to extend the current undergraduate Childcare Grant to postgraduate students and, as a further step, consider how to extend the free-hours entitlements, currently only available to workers, to those in postgraduate education - a critical part of the research workforce. #WhoCaresGW4ChildcareCampaign #ICareGW4ChildcareCampaign

Professor Chris Day, Chair of the Russell Group and Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University, assesses what the change of Government could mean for the university sector and for R&D funding. Writing in Research Professional News, he highlights the positive rhetoric we've heard so far, the need for a commitment towards block grant funding, and the opportunities for universities and Government to work in partnership. https://lnkd.in/ejPzeTbB

Our new briefing, 'Helping under-represented students succeed in higher education', highlights the ongoing work our universities do to increase student intake from under-represented areas and reduce educational inequalities - improving life chances for young and adult learners across the UK. Read more 👇
🎉 Excited to share a new piece from the Russell Group today: "Helping under-represented students succeed in higher education"! We can all agree that educational inequality impacts both individuals and the country as a whole. Universities, in collaboration with schools, colleges, and other partners, play a crucial role in addressing these disparities. They work to remove barriers to success in higher education and conduct research to inform impactful policies that can make a real difference. Our latest briefing highlights the increasing number of students from under-represented areas at Russell Group universities. It showcases outstanding examples of outreach and support initiatives our members undertake to support these students. More can always be done to support students from under-represented backgrounds and that is why we look forward to working with the new government to help address educational inequality and improve life chances for young and adult learners across the UK. #HigherEducation #UniversityAccess #SocialMobility

As students continue to struggle with high living costs, here is more evidence that it's having an impact on their choices and their student experience. We echo London Higher's calls for Government to increase maintenance support, and reintroduce maintenance grants for poorer students - to set students up for success. https://lnkd.in/eeTiV-8Z
NEW REPORT❗️ Our report out this morning is entitled “Opportunity Cost: Access to HE and the cost of living crisis in London.” Dr Richard Boffey and Mair Lawrence-Matthews find that although the cost of living is not causing students to opt out of HE study, it does have an impact on choice – with more students choosing to study close to home in London👇
