The latest Rho Motion battery storage stats are in! 🔋The BESS market continues to lead battery demand growth, with nearly 60GWh of grid scale storage installed in the first half of 2024, an impressive 62% y-o-y increase! 🚗 For comparison, battery demand from EVs has increased ~20% so far in 2024, resulting in growing market share from BESS reaching 15% compared to 11% for the same period in 2023! 📈 The Rho Motion BESS database now tracks close to 5,000 stationary storage projects globally, accounting for over 1TWh of batteries! The database is growing fast, with over 200GWh of new projects added in H1 2024! 🚗BYD's Global Expansion🚗 BYD, often hailed as Tesla's biggest rival, has been making notable efforts to expand its global footprint. In 2023 it sold 120,000 vehicles abroad compared to over 2.5 million in China, the growth of its exports has not been proportional to its domestic sales. Currently, the majority of BYD's vehicles are produced in its three China plants. However, as the company aims for a larger share of the global market, it has announced multiple new facilities worldwide. Alongside this, BYD is boosting its brand presence by sponsoring major events such as the Euro's and the Copa America. BYD's global expansion comes at a challenging time, with many countries imposing tariffs on Chinese imported vehicles to protect their domestic automotive industries. Notably, BYD received the lowest subsidy of any Chinese automaker in the EU's recent import tariffs. Widening industry & regional growth rates see LFP battery demand grow the fastest in the first half of 2024, in line with China's growing market share and a strong BESS market globally. 🔋 Rho Motion tracked battery demand across all end use markets increasing 23% in H1 2024 to over 510GWh, with EV battery demand accounting for 72% of this. However, the stationary storage market saw the strongest battery demand growth increasing its market share to 15%. 🚗 EV sales in June were up 13% y-o-y, bringing the first half of the year to over 7 million units sold. Regional disparity is increasing, with China leading growth in H1 2024 vs H1 2023 at 30% y-o-y increase, compared to 9% in the US & Canada and just 1% in the EU & EFTA & UK. 🏭 Amidst the EV & battery slow down, cell manufacturers are being impacted, with Chinese players typically faring much better than their Korean and Japanese counterparts. In the first half of 2024 LG Energy Solution, SK On and Panasonic all saw their batteries deployed in EVs fall compared to H1 2023 as EV slowdown hits them the hardest. Similarly in the storage market, the skew of growth is much higher towards Chinese players due to the popularity of cheap LFP cells here. This comes at a time of raised concern from a number of these ex China players, with SK On declaring a state of ‘emergency management’ this week. 7 million EVs have been sold in the first half of 2024! 🚗 The EV market (BEV & PHEV) has grown by 20% in H1 2024 vs H1 2023, resulting in global battery demand for Passenger Car & Light duty EVs reaching 340GWh so far in 2024! ⚡The Chinese market has grown by 30% YTD led by the rapid growth in PHEV sales. This is due to the rising number of models available alongside the growth in Range Extender EVs. BYD also recorded another PHEV sales record in June 2024. 🌍 The European market has grown by only 1% in H1 2024 vs H1 2023, with 1.5 million EVs sold. Results have been mixed in Europe, with Germany sales falling over the same period, but sales in France and the UK are up. 📈 The US market has grown by 9%, with most OEMs growing y-o-y. General Motors continue to ramp up production in Mexico with several EV models, producing almost 60,000 EVs in Mexico so far this year. 🚗 There is an upcoming wave of dedicated EV production facilities in the US and Canada. 💲 With the IRA in the US stipulating that the final assembly of an EV must take place in North America for it to be eligible for a tax credit, several OEMs have announced dedicated EV production facilities in the US and Canada. 📆 Hyundai’s Metaplant North America is set to be the next EV-only production facility in North America when the 2025 IONIQ 5 starts production at the site in Q4 this year. With production originally due to start in Q1 2025, Hyundai’s plant is the only dedicated EV production facility due to start production ahead of schedule as plants for VinFast, Ford, Nissan and Rivian all face delays. 🌍 Beyond North America, the implementation of protectionist policies in Brazil, Turkey, and the EU to protect the local automotive industry against Chinese EVs has led to several Chinese OEMs announcing plans to localise EV production. Leapmotor has already started production in Poland, Chery is set to begin production in Spain later this year and BYD will soon have plants in Hungary, Turkey, and Brazil.
