After Onfido achieved one of the biggest exits in recent European tech history, I was keen to dig into what made us so successful. For me, psychological safety was at the heart of our success. Husayn, Eamon and Ruhul, as founders and leaders, worked in partnership with the early employees to create a company culture that allowed people to be their authentic selves AND gave them the opportunities to thrive. Psychological safety allowed colleagues to be open with one another, which built trust, creating a foundation for people to disagree but, more importantly, listen to one another, always proceeding from a place of empathy. When I started out in the workplace, I assumed that I couldn't be a successful leader in a tech company and be openly queer. It was the culture of Onfido that gradually helped me realize how wrong I was. I believe that story is true for many people who worked at Onfido in the early days. In a week like this, where we're about to celebrate Pride in London, I am reminded how important it is, especially as a leader, to put your ego aside and proceed with empathy, focusing on listening to others. It is, first and foremost, our responsibility to create an environment where our colleagues can thrive, especially at times like these when basic human rights fall to the mercy of politics. Thanks again to Toby for spending the time talking through how to create inclusive (a.k.a. fast growth) companies.
