Influencer Marketing is nothing new. The use of celebrities to promote a brand goes back a century. In the 1950's Marilyn Monroe fronted campaigns for Coca-Cola, Winston cigarettes, Clairol shampoo and a hair colourant ! But what is new today is that there has been a blurring of two things; the celebrity status of the 'promoter', and the lack of transparency that what they are promoting is actually a paid for advert and not their true thoughts ! The key influencers nowadays are not true movie stars or high achievers, they are simply masters of creating semi-addictive TikTok videos and Instagram reels.
