Last week, we had not one, but two lovely work experiences! Yasmin joined us for 2 days and put her love of graphics into creating a new ident for the end of our motion videos, taking inspiration from this very sign! 🦑 And Samiul, a lover of all things maths and data, joined us for a day of analysing campaign data and created insightful trends off the back of it. It’s honestly such a pleasure having wonderful early talent come through our doors and teaching us a thing or two! But it’s also such a good exercise for us to reconnect with that audience, create tasks that are not only relevant but engaging too and to ensure the experience is meaningful for them. ✍️ Do you remember your first work experience? Last week was my first time attending the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Although I’m still a little run down, I’m feeling grateful for the experience. I got to speak on a panel on the VaynerX yacht and urged the industry to celebrate junior, Gen Z talent. Feedback is more than criticism; hyping up your juniors is just as important to help them become future leaders. I made new friends off the back of inspirational conversations, and reconnected with some incredible people who I hadn’t realised how much I’d missed. I was given opportunities and access to experiences that I’d never usually find myself in. (I mentioned the yacht right??) Cannes was far from a perfect week. I saw and experienced sexual harassment (both physical and verbal), racism, uncomfortable propositions and power plays. At some point I might write more about it but I wanted to make this a positive post because I ended the week feeling full of gratitude. I will forever rep Brixton Finishing School and I’m so grateful to the team and the #Arise Future Leaders cohort for having each other’s backs all week. Thank you to BFS, digilearning and everyone who supported #CannesForAll. We aren’t just moving the needle, we’re blowing the whole thing up. The art of Work Experience. Too short to be meaningful, too long and it becomes a burden for both sides. This is Louis, he’s 17 y/o studying A Levels in English, History and Art. He spent 3 days with us last week, ending with this homage to Michelangelo - “The Creation of Adam Squid”. Summer holidays are coming and Work Experience requests are doing the rounds on various Friends & Family WhatsApp groups. Here’s a fix. If you have a spare wall, try this 3 day carb free programme, all paints used were water based acrylic. DAY 1 am: Intro to Pink Squid and shadowing a Designer working on a recognisable coffee brand project. Understanding commercial creativity. DAY 1 pm: Live brief. Develop a visual interpretation of our Values - Clarity, Courage & Community. DAY 2: ALL DAY: Prototyping, sketch ideas. Working with feedback and refining composition to work with the space. DAY 3: Activation day. Louis with paint brush in hand had built up his confidence to translate his concepts to the big scary white WALL.
