Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer yesterday laid out his plans to “take the breaks off Britain”, unveiling a package of 40 legislative bills aimed at boosting economic growth with reforms to energy and planning in Labour’s first King’s Speech in 14 years. The priorities set out by the new Government yesterday largely reflected its election manifesto commitments, with legislation on issues ranging from housebuilding and railways to the NHS. While commitments to nationalisation, more centralised control of planning, greater powers afforded to workers and a new industrial strategy will remind many of past Labour governments, the explicit rejection of a tax-and-spend approach to government underlined the influence of Starmer’s Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, and her long-promised iron-clad fiscal discipline. There were some notable omissions, particularly around the regulation of artificial intelligence and lowering the voting age to 16. At Pagefield, we’ve pulled together some snap analysis of the King’s Speech. See below for an overview of Starmer’s first legislative programme as Prime Minister, including reactions from across politics, the media and industry.

The new Labour Government has pledged to kickstart the UK’s economic growth and championing UK prosperity abroad will be crucial in achieving this. But what will be in the brief for the incoming Business and Trade Secretary, Jonathan Reynolds? The civil service has been busy the last few weeks preparing advice for the new Government, and our Senior Adviser on Trade John Alty has provided an exclusive look at what might be in the brief for the new Business and Trade Secretary, based on his experience as Permanent Secretary at the Department for International Trade (DIT). John expects the brief to include a series of priorities which require early decisions, such as Labour’s Trade Strategy and the UK’s position on Chinese EVs, and key stakeholders to meet in the sector, including the EU Commissioner and Trade Ministers in key markets such as India and the Gulf.
