Following a successful 2023 season, Oxitec and the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) announced that a fourth season of the FKMCD-Oxitec Mosquito Project will run through the Summer of 2024. For the 2024 season, the joint project team will be studying the integration of this sustainable, biological approach with current practices including the use of insecticides. Oxitec boxes will be placed outside in a range of locations in Florida Keys neighborhoods but no Oxitec male mosquitoes will be deployed or released, instead this work will use only a locally sourced, wild strain of Aedes aegypti. Oxitec mosquitoes have demonstrated the ability to control the invasive, disease transmitting Aedes aegypti mosquito, which has been established throughout the Florida Keys. Oxitec’s safe, sustainable and targeted biological pest control technology is harmless to local ecosystems and beneficial species, like butterflies and bees. Cutting malaria by 90% by 2030 could boost the economies of malaria-endemic countries by an incredible $142.7 billion, according to recent research by Malaria No More UK. This research indicates that an additional $31bn could be generated in exports to some of the most affected malaria-endemic countries in Africa; with an almost $4bn rise for G7 countries, almost $1.5bn for the US, and more than $450m for the UK. The benefits of falling malaria rates would be felt across the world. We’re committed to working with urgency to bring new solutions to help #EndMalaria. Oxitec’s FriendlyMosquito malaria program targets two malaria-spreading mosquito species that threaten communities and pose major challenges to the international community’s regional malaria eradication goals: Anopheles stephensi, and Anopheles albimanus. We’re working with world-class partners, setting our sights on malaria-spreading mosquitoes, which are adapting rapidly. To outpace them, we’re forging new ways of working together. 🌍 https://lnkd.in/gCx6uZig

“The mosquito campaign is a race against the clock. ⏲️🦟 The insects are becoming more resistant to traditional prevention methods, while the #ClimateCrisis has opened up new regions where they can thrive.” We’re thankful to Michael Peel of the Financial Times for featuring Oxitec’s Friendly™ mosquitoes in his latest piece on the race against time to defeat mosquito-borne disease, highlighting the importance of #innovative tools in the fight to end #malaria & #dengue. Oxitec’s #FriendlyMosquitoes are already proven against the dengue-spreading mosquito, Aedes aegypti, and we’re working with urgency to scale our solution to protect households, communities & businesses across Brazil. In May, we launched the first pilot releases of Friendly™ Anopheles stephensi in Djibouti, bringing us one step closer to joining the fight to #EndMalaria. 📈 Brazil has exceeded 5 million #dengue cases in 5 months, with health officials linking this spike to #ElNiño and #ClimateChange. In the face of a changing planet, innovative tools are essential to fight the mosquitoes spreading disease. Oxitec is working around the clock to deploy #FriendlyMosquitoes, proven to reduce populations of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes which spread dengue, Zika and chikungunya. Recently, Natalia Verza Ferreira of Oxitec do Brasil was invited by the Federal Government’s Commission on Science, Technology, Innovation and Informatics (CCT) to participate in discussions on innovative tools to fight dengue in Brazil. 🎙🎙🎙 Our launch of our first #malaria-focused solution in #Djibouti generated headlines around the world last week. We received a number of good questions from various corners of the world about the basics, so for those interested in a quick primer on what we're doing, I joined the The Naked Scientists from University of Cambridge for a nice discussion on the basics - what Oxitec's technology is, why we're focused on the dangerous and spreading malaria vector #Anophelesstephensi, why we're working in Djibouti first, and why this work is so important...and urgent. It's a quick and easy one.
