🦪 A PEARL OF THE OCEAN 🦪 Today we’re shellebrating all things oysters! A simple, but often overlooked animal that’s a champion on our Oceans. Despite their size, oysters have the power to provide unique habitats and a range of benefits to both the surrounding environment and to people. Every small action can make a difference! 🧑🦳 Oysters can live up to 20 years. They grow by attaching themselves to hard surfaces in the water and are typically mature enough to reproduce within a year. 🌊 Oyster beds and reefs provide habitat for many other species. A single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day, cleaning the water as they do so. 🎊 Oysters have significant cultural importance in many coastal communities, both as a food source and for their economic value in the fishing industry. Oyster festivals and shellebrations are common in many parts of the world. The Oyster Restoration Project began with a vision to restore a once thriving oyster population in the Solent. Oysters were once abundant across the Solent and formed a ring of beds around the UK. More than 85% of oyster beds have been lost globally with the UK population declining by more than half in the last 25 years.  🦪 MILLIONS OF NATIVE OYSTERS 🦪 Blue Marine Foundation Let's throwback to 2015, where thousands of native oysters are saved in the Solent, once the site of Europe’s largest oyster fishery. Placed into nurseries to release millions if not billions of larvae back into the system. This marks the beginning of the Solent oyster project with a vision to restore a once thriving oyster population. Oysters have been fished in the UK since the Roman times, reaching a peak in the 1920s where 40 million oysters were eaten each year. By the 1960s this had fallen to 3 million oysters a year. In the Solent, 15 million oysters, or 840 tonnes, were fished out as recently as 1979. Oyster beds and reefs provide habitat for many other species. A single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day, cleaning the water as they do so. Since the project started, over 100,000 oysters have been restored to various locations in the Solent, including two seabed reef sites. *Repost from Blue Marine Foundation* Over recent centuries, we have lost huge amounts of habitats; including up to 50% of seagrass meadows, 85% of saltmarsh habitats and 95% of native oyster reefs 🌊 Oysters are nature's water filters. A single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day, removing pollutants from the Ocean! We must actively restore these marine ecosystems to their former abundance. Initiatives such as the Blue Marine Foundation 'Oyster Restoration Project' are helping to do this 🌱 Each OceanSaver products donates 1% for restoring vital marine habitats, including oysters, in the Solent. However, Seascape restoration projects currently face a lengthy, complex, and costly marine licensing process. Marine licensing is crucial to permitting activity on the seabed, such as planting seagrass or restoring oyster reefs, whilst protecting the environment and human health.
