CV TIP: Talking about your Tech Stack Here's what you should be doing to your CV to land that role… We sort through hundreds of CVs daily at Obsidian Search for various engineering roles. Stating the obvious, but tech stack is one of the main things we look for... Lots of engineers have a section called something like: - Languages - Skills - Stack And then list a wide range of these. But guess what we want to know when we read this? What you're using right now, in your current or most recent role. Adding this in means that recruiters and hiring managers can pinpoint if you'll have the know-how to hit the ground running, Using Node.js or TypeScript or C# or whatever language we're looking for. It’s important to mention what you’re interested in and what you’ve used in the past, but also what you’re using currently. P.S. Engineers, what languages are you using at the moment? Let us know below! [TLDR; give yourself the best chance of landing a relevant role by talking about what tech you're actually currently using!] #TechRecruitment #SWE #CVTips #Programming

9 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years… When should you think about changing roles as an engineer? In our opinion, there are 2 keys things to consider. 1. Your tenures so far Look at your CV. Does it have lots of 5-6 months stints at different companies? If so, you might want to be cautious about changing roles. Companies will likely be wary about investing in someone who looks likely to move on soon. 2. Whether your current role is still giving you everything you need If you're after growth opportunities, are you still getting the chance to reach up? If you have responsibilities outside of work, do you have enough flexibility in your job? If not, it might be time to look elsewhere. Spend five mins on LinkedIn and you'll hear lots of different opinions on this from lots of different recruiters… But ultimately, there's no magic number. Think about your tenures and whether your role is still serving you - then plan from there! #TechRecruitment #SWE #CV

Working at a product firm vs. a tech consultancy as a SWE… Are they really that different? (Yes, they are and here's why.) 1. Starting with an obvious one. With a product firm, you're usually centred on one product, update, or sector. Meanwhile, a tenure at a consultancy could mean exposure to multiple products, projects, sectors and markets. 2. For product roles, you usually need expertise in the specific tech stack that hiring managers are looking for. At a tech consultancy, you'll probably be expected to understand a wider range of languages, ecosystems, architectures, etc. (Not be experts in all - but have some broad knowledge!) 3. A product firm doesn’t always require you to communicate directly with customers or clients. However, in a consultancy, you’ll probably need to hone those communication skills and liaise with clients often. Which do you prefer as a SWE? VOTE below! P.S. think we've missed something crucial off our list? Let us know in the comments below! #SWE #TechRecruitment #Engineering #TechConsultancy

Hybrid, remote, on-site… Here's what your preference says about you as an engineer. 1. Remote You're pretty comfortable and confident in your own ability & skills, and you appreciate the flexibility which comes with remote working. You're also most productive when left to your own devices and you most likely have good virtual communication skills. 2. On-site You do your best work when surrounded by other engineers and departments. You enjoy continuing to learn from others, whatever your seniority - and company culture is very important to you. (Maybe you spearhead culture initiatives once in a while?) 3. Hybrid You like having the best of both worlds. You need some flexibility but also value in-person collaboration. You like bouncing off other people but also need time to get your head down and smash out work. Personally, at Obsidian Search we like a bit of balance but appreciate that everyone's different. That's why we're glad to have roles which span all types of working arrangements. So, whatever your preference and work personality, we could have a role for you.
