  • Work has started on the first phase of a £2m water network upgrade in Ashington, Northumberland. The construction of a new water main in the Briardene, Wansbeck Road and Green Lane area is being carried out by our partner, United Living Group. Elements of the work close to schools are being prioritised to take place during the summer holidays, with further work nearby running until November 2024. A second phase of work is being planned for 2025. Ultimately, a total of 5.2km of new water pipes will be installed, helping to support recent population growth in the area and helping to protect supplies for customers.

  • As work progresses on our £14m project to support the recovery of the River Tyne’s European Eel population, members of the team have been out helping reshape and enhance recreational space for the area’s human population. The work to install eel screens is taking place at our pumping station at Ovingham, Northumberland, and is being carried out by our partners, Mott MacDonald Bentley | MMB. After discussions with Ovingham Parish Council about how the team can support the community during the work, members of the MMB team paid a weekend visit to the local playing field to prepare the ground for improvements. By flattening and reducing the overall size of a mound that sits in the field, the team have made space for the installation of a new slide that has been donated by Ovingham Parish Council, and created a raised area that can be further developed for use. Well done team!

  • A massive shout out to our teams who have been helping out at People’s Kitchen in Newcastle this week. As part of our volunteering scheme, Just an Hour, Craig and Emily from our Business analysis and planning team helped to put together care and grooming packages for pets, while sorting through some shoes and clothes. They found the experience really humbling and loved taking time of out their day to support a local cause.💙

  • A project to increase capacity at a County Durham sewage treatment works and help protect river water quality has been completed. We’ve invested £5.8m at Aldin Grange Sewage Treatment Works (STW) at Bearpark, near Durham City. As well as increasing the site’s capacity with the installation of new treatment plant and tanks, the upgrades include additional equipment to support improvements to make the final treated water that is returned to the environment via the River Browney even better. Work was carried out by our partners Mott MacDonald Bentley | MMB.

  • Work is starting on upgrades to Greatham Sewage Treatment Works in Hartlepool, which will help to protect water quality. We’re investing £1.1m in the installation of a new storm tank at the site. The tank will hold storm water and wastewater from homes at times of heavy rainfall, so that it can be treated when flows reduce, protecting against the risk of spills to the environment. The work, which is being carried out by Northumbrian Water’s partner, Esh-Stantec, is due to start at the end of July, running until the end of March 2025. Construction traffic is being managed to reduce the impact on the village, including working to avoid, where possible, school drop-off and pick-up times. Plans are also being developed to further enhance the site through the creation of a wetlands facility that would provide a greener, more sustainable solution to wastewater treatment and management. Major milestone achieved at Hexham where Esh-Stantec is delivering its second major treatment works upgrade for NWG (Northumbrian Water Group). Following the demolition of the existing percolating filters, their reconstruction using pre-cast units, and installation of new distribution hardware, the new filters are now complete and have taken over the full operation of filtration on site. The remaining old filters have been taken out of use. Elsewhere, the civils work for the new inlet works area is complete and progress is being made on the above ground inlet screens tank and the M&E installation, with the new kiosks in place. #wastewatertreatment #civilengineering #wastewaterinfrastructure
