Making public transport great for our environment, economy and communities

About us

At Nexus we're working to make public transport great for our environment, economy and communities. There are few people living in Tyne and Wear whose daily lives are not touched in some way by Nexus. Whether it's getting to work, education, family days out, nights out or sporting activities, our Metro, bus and ferry network provides sustainable, reliable and affordable travel. The public transport we plan, provide and promote improves the economic prosperity of North East England and the daily lives of its people. We're also looking to the future, creating the travel networks people will want to use in decades to come. Nexus is the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive and administers funds on behalf of the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority.

Metro will be running a full service to all destinations on Saturday 10 August. Due to the planned protests Monument Metro station will be closed from the start of service on Saturday as a precaution, but we expect we will re-open it later in the day with the agreement of the police. Closing selected city centre stations is something we’ve done in the recent past for events including the Great North Run, Sam Fender concerts and Champions League football games. It’s a sensible way to manage crowds when there is a lot going on in the city to keep things running smoothly for customers. There are always alternative stations within walking distance.

    North East Mayor

My joint message with our North East council leaders to the people of our region. Our region and our people are proud and welcoming. That’s what we’re known for. We’ll never accept racism or discrimination. We won’t be defined by the actions of a right wing minority who seek to cause fear and division. That is the real story of our region. Here’s our full statement👇🏻

Metro’s iconic network of tunnels is featuring in a four-day arts festival in an exhibit showcasing hidden parts of Newcastle city centre which are inaccessible to the public. A team from the arts-led cultural production agency Curated Place have filmed and photographed parts of the Metro system that the public never get to see, including tunnels, voids and air vents. And these iconic images have gone on display at the NOVUM Festival, which is being held at Newcastle Civic Centre 8-11 August. The images include the escalator voids at Monument Metro station, the tunnels at St James Metro station and the Prudhoe Street Metro vent shaft next to Eldon Square bus station.

Brilliant to see the model Metro train turned ball pool proving so popular with families in Byker this week. It's their as part of a series of summer fun events being held at Hadrian Square for kids and their parents to enjoy during the summer holidays.

Our Metro renewal works at the weekend included installation of 287 metres of new track in the Fawdon area. The works comprised the installation of track bed, sleepers, ballast and rails. A road closure was in place across Fawdon level crossing, with the crossing surface temporarily removed and reinstated during the weekend to allow the track renewal to be undertaken. We then tamped a 450 metre stretch of line utilising the Nexus tamping vehicle. There was also a range of secondary works carried out including lineside estate and station works. All site works were delivered by Nexus Infrastructure Works Delivery team, with support from key suppliers, Story Rail, SMART TRAX Rail Ltd, G&B Civil Engineering, McGinley’s, and RSS Infrastructure Ltd Infrastructure.

A message from Chief Supt Steve Wykes who is overseeing our policing response to demonstrations: Over the next few days we expect there to be further protest activity in our area and we know there will be members of the community who are feeling frightened and marginalised at this time. But I want to try and reassure you that we are working hard to protect you. Today, every officer that is deployable is in uniform and out on the street. We are well-resourced and ready to tackle anyone who tries to cause violent unrest. The right to lawful protest is a key part of any democracy, however, we will not accept people using them as a means to commit crime. A robust policing presence has been stood up. Officer rest days have been cancelled and resources redeployed to ensure officers are out and visible in our communities to keep you safe. Please speak to any one of them if you have any concerns. There is a lot of misinformation on social media. We’d ask people to look to their local leaders, officers and trusted new sources, such as our own social media, for updates and information. We are so proud to serve you and we will do everything we can to make you feel safe.

The official film telling the story of our £3.4m project to renew a key track in junction in the Metro tunnels below the streets of Newcastle. The Prudhoe Street crossover, which carries 400 train movements per day, is the busiest junction on Metro and is essential for the smooth operation of services through the centre of Newcastle and Gateshead. The renewal works were carried out over two weekend line closures to keep the amount of disruption to customers at a minimum and planned in before the start of major restoration works on the Tyne Bridge. The replacement of the Prudhoe Street crossing completes the renewal of rail in the tunnels under Newcastle, from Jesmond through to Gateshead. Nexus has delivered this work in the dead of night over recent years, without disruption to Metro’s millions of customers. Thanks to the team SMART TRAX Rail Ltd for doing such a great job with this major project. https://lnkd.in/eATxAiTE
