Election fever is hitting the UK! 🔥, and across the world with 64 elections and >2 billion people going to the polls in 2024. We have witnessed a massive rollback on sexual and reproductive rights and bodily autonomy since Roe versus Wade was overturned. Yet at the 77th World Health Assembly – theme “All for Health, Health for All” – SRHR was not on the agenda. We believe that menstrual health is the gateway to discussing broader SRHR issues, and we want to see it fully included in WHA agenda's moving forward. Menstrual Rights Global, through our new article published in NADJA Media, urges immediate action to integrate menstrual health into the global health. We call on World Health Organization to bring for a resolution to protect holistic menstrual health across the life course, because it is central to the equality, rights, and dignity of women, adolescent girls, transgender men, and non-binary people who menstruate. Menstrual health is a public health and human rights issue! Yesterday was World Population Day 2024! In a year of 64 elections globally, UNFPA, WHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS, and UN Women have released a statement emphasising the need for governments to commit to advancing sexual and reproductive health, rights, and bodily autonomy. "In April, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, governments renewed their commitment and determination to accelerate the implementation of the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), the principles of which are embedded in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including commitments to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services and to advance reproductive rights." We must continue to advance menstrual health - it is the start of the SRH journey for many and unlocks opportunities to build self-efficacy, bodily autonomy, and health literacy in a global environment that is seeing consistent push back on SRHR! The World Health Organization (WHO) gathered for its 77th World Health Assembly in May this year to tackle global health priorities and security under the theme “All for Health, Health for All.” However, despite its critical role in addressing global health issues, the crucial topic of menstrual health was overlooked. This article written by members of Menstrual Rights Global, a collective of activists, health workers and researchers working to promote menstrual health worldwide, says that menstrual health remains a deeply neglected issue and calls for a commitment from member states to drive menstrual health policies forward, such as abolishing the pink tax and making period products free. "An inclusionary global health sector must consider, respond to, and make accommodations for the 1.8 billion women, adolescent girls, and people who are menstruating each month," they say. "It should recognise the specific health concerns and needs of people who menstruate. It must mainstream these across health and social care systems globally. We urge global health leaders to listen to the voices of those with lived experience, technical expertise, and decades of fighting for menstrual health and justice." 🔔 New Article Alert 🔔 At the 77th World Health Assembly, the theme “All for Health, Health for All” was at the forefront. Yet, menstrual health was overlooked. Menstrual Rights Global, through our new article published in NADJA Media, urges immediate action to integrate menstrual health into the global health agenda! In this article, we argued for: 🔴 Missed Opportunity: Menstrual health was not included in the main agenda, highlighting a significant gap for 1.8 billion people who menstruate. 🔴 Policy Progress: Despite strides in global menstrual health policies, more commitment is needed from leaders. 🔴 Human Rights Issue: Menstrual health is about complete well-being, not just product provision. Comprehensive systems are essential. 🔴 Intersectional Approach: Menstrual health intersects with sexual and reproductive rights and requires multi-sectoral cooperation. 🔴 Call to Action: Leaders must listen to those with lived experiences and expertise to protect the rights and dignity of all who menstruate. Menstrual health is crucial to global health and human rights.
