Millions rely on #WomenCHWs for healthcare 👩⚕️ Yet most women Community Health Workers are not in formal sector jobs, they are uncounted, subject to violence and harassment and do not have the salaries, professional skills, supervision, and supplies they need to succeed. This systemic neglect perpetuates gender discrimination, creating a cycle of disadvantage for both the CHWs and the communities they serve. This World Health Worker Week, Women in Global Health calls for gender and economic justice for women Community Health Workers. Read our 7 key asks for the #WHWeek 👉 https://lnkd.in/d7_dtxFh

Challenging Power and Privilege For Gender Equity in Health
About us
Women in Global Health (WGH) was founded in 2015 when four women in the health sector met on social media outraged that women are the majority in the sector but hold only a minority of global health leadership roles. Today, we are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with 55 Chapters in 51 countries, and over 6,000 members. We are the largest and loudest women-led movement demanding gender equity in leadership, career opportunities, and pay; safe and decent working conditions; and gender equity in universal health coverage and health emergency preparedness and response. We build alliances and our own movement so women in global health will be heard. We are working towards a world that enables women from all regions to be leaders in global health and catalysts for better health for all.

The urgent need to support health workers’ well-being and resiliency ⚠️ Burnout among healthcare workers, particularly women, has resulted in crisis levels of exhaustion, stress, and depression. Women in Global Health shared their perspectives during the #WHA77 side event with the University of Utah Health, International SOS, IFMSA | International Federation of Medical Students' Associations & Emergency Medical Teams. Dr. Shabnum Sarfraz reflected on how the gender unconducive work environment, gender pay gap, exposure to violence and sexual harassment, and unequal career advancement opportunities exacerbate burnout in women health workers, often accentuating the need to migrate. Dr. Beverly Johnson from WGH Canada underlined that the better well-being of health workers means meeting the health needs of patients better. Wellness programs, flexible working hours, daycare and transport facilities availability, and ensuring female health workers' safety at workplaces are crucial steps. Farheen Nahvi concluded with the call to action, focusing on four key pillars of the Gender Equal Health and Care Workforce Initiative. She called for promoting gender-balanced leadership, acknowledging and compensating unpaid labor predominantly undertaken by women, protecting female health workers from violence and harassment, and ensuring safe, decent working conditions that address the mental health needs of all health workers. #WomenInGH

📢 #WGH latest newsletter is out! https://lnkd.in/dxrQ4Tnr Read about our collective action on #healthleadership and #genderequality in global health at #WHA77 The Women in Global Health delegation was proud to take a stand at the 77th World Health Assembly, driving commitments to #genderresponsive health systems that protect the health and rights of #women and girls worldwide. Our team and Chapters made their voices heard, advocating for transformative change, #genderequity in health leadership, #fairwages, an end to #unpaid labor, and safe working conditions free from #violence. WGH delegates Farheen Nahvi, Dr. Poorvaphaba Patil and Olga Wdowiczak delivered statements calling on member states to act on all commitments to gender-responsive health systems in the 2019 and 2023 UHC Political Declarations. They also called on the World Health Organization for gender transformative implementation of 14th WHO general programme of work, and prioritize equal leadership for women at all levels. WGH Chapters from Nigeria, India, Kenya and the global team led by WGH Global Director, Gender & Health Shabnum Sarfraz participated as distinguished panelists on #genderequality in health workforce in #EMRO, gender equal #UHC and closing women's health gap through public-private partnership. The action-packed engagement also included participation in the #WalkTheTalk challenge where we were joined by WHO Director General @Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to show solidarity and commitment to gender equity in health. WGH also released its annual count of women Chief Delegates at #WHA77 The findings show the count of women Chief Delegates stood at 30 percent, that not even a third of national delegations to WHA this year were led by women, with the total gender count dropped by 2 percentage points compared to 2023. Progress is a collective journey and together we continue to fight for our shared values and mandate. #genderequalhealth #leadership #healthforall

Three speakers from the Women in Global Health community, @Venus Mushininga from WGH Zimbabwe, Kim Sales from Women in Global Health Philippines and Duha Shellah from Palestine presented the impactful work of the #womeninGH global community at the ongoing Global Health Security Conference 2024 in Sydney. Moderated by WGH Australia's Chair Meru Sheel, distinguished panelists presented evidence-led recommendations to strengthen women’s involvement and elevate women leadership for decision making in global health security #governance. Global health security, like other areas of global health, is delivered by women but governed and led by men. Global health will only be secure when women in health have a new social contract based on decent work and equality in decision-making. Let's keep pushing for more equitable access to decision-making roles for all women. #governance #leadership #healthforall #healthsecurity #GHSC2024

To truly close the gender health gap, we need to reveal the stories hiding behind the statistics 💬 By understanding these stories we can identify the true catalysts for change and tailor our approaches towards gender-responsive health systems. Health systems that truly address the unique challenges women and girls face globally. We look forward to collaborating with our partners and country chapters and tapping into those robust data sets. Together, let's translate insights into policy action from the global to the local level 🌐
Building on the momentum from our research with the World Economic Forum highlighting $1 trillion health and economic opportunity to close the women's health gap, the McKinsey Health Institute hosted a conversation with global leaders on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, digging deep into the drivers of this disparity, and actions needed across private and public sectors to bridge it. 📢 The messages were clear: 1) To advance women's health, we first need agency, action, and investment 2) Public-private partnerships will be necessary to foster innovation, but we must have clear KPIs and objectives to make sure we are making progress, and must accurately account for the needs of women in different contexts 3) For solutions to be sustainable, they need to start with clear objectives and outcomes, plus continuous communication between implementers, partners, and end users 4) All solutions must be gender-informed in design, to effectively solve for the unique challenges faced by women My sincere thanks to our panelists Dr. Angela Muriuki of @FIND, Nicola Pluchino of Gynécologie et médecine de la fertilité | CHUV, Shabnum Sarfraz who is a Former Member Social Sector, Government of Pakistan and Vanina Laurent-Ledru of @Foundation S - The Sanofi Collective for sharing their insights and expertise, and my colleague and MHI Global Co-leader Erica Hutchins Coe for moderating this rich discussion. 🌍 Get latest women's health interactive (MHI in collaboration with WEF), breaking down the country-level data on the women's health gap by intervention and GDP impact: https://lnkd.in/ejsP3XWA #globalhealth #CloseTheWomensHealthGap #MHIatWHA #WHA77
