Our partner, Centro Latinoamericano de Investigación Periodística (CLIP), is transforming collaborative journalism across the region. Founded in 2019 by Maria Teresa Ronderos, Giannina Segnini, and Marina Walker Guevara, CLIP coordinates cross-border investigations, providing technical and editorial support to strengthen the investigative ecosystem. With nearly 100 media partners in Latin America and beyond, CLIP has tackled issues from religious fundamentalism to migrant journeys and corruption. By offering services like data processing, security assistance, and technology sharing, CLIP empowers journalists to pursue high-impact stories in challenging environments, fostering a new era of radical collaboration in Latin American journalism. 💡 “We want to have an effect so people do not feel alone in the face of terrifying regimes. So they can ensure that the record remains for history, for change, to show at some point what these regimes are doing, and to discredit their propaganda. We want those journalists to know they’re not alone… We are here, and we are all bound together.”

The documentary Estado de Silencio, directed by Santiago Maza Stern and produced by La Corriente del Golfo México, premiered in June at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film follows the lives of four journalists in Mexico who have suffered persecution and violence for sharing and exposing the reality of doing their jobs under constant threat to themselves and their families: https://lnkd.in/gACP_Q6U We invited three key voices in this project – María de Jesús Peters, Diego Luna, and Marcos Vizcarra – to reflect on its importance for democracy ⬇

In our era of increasing political polarisation and misinformation, a team of Brazilian researchers has introduced an innovative AI tool for measuring crowd sizes at protests. By leveraging drone imagery and artificial intelligence, this solution provides a more accurate alternative to traditional estimation methods. As Flávia Milhorance reports for Rest of World, the tool has already debunked inflated crowd size claims, such as those made by former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's team. With demonstrations on the rise globally, this advancement offers a crucial means of objectively assessing political phenomena and public sentiment. As misinformation and exaggerated claims continue to shape political narratives, this tech-driven solution promises to bring clarity and accuracy to the understanding of protest movements worldwide: 💡 “Protest size matters. A small versus large crowd is an important signaling device to a regime about the relative strength of the opposition, especially in authoritarian environments where information is otherwise hard to come by.”

Together with Asphalt & Ink and in collaboration with the Luminate, we delved into the power of storytelling to ignite change. Our #study uncovered barriers hindering #collaboration between strategic communications firms, #donors, and change agents in #Kenya. Key findings reveal that collaboration amplifies change agents' impact on #policy and #behaviour. Funders play a pivotal role by supporting strategic #communications initiatives, and ensuring impactful work reaches audiences. Breaking silos is crucial; communication firms need exposure to change agents, who, in turn, should embrace strategic communication tools. Last year, in collaboration with Luminate, we looked at how companies that use digital advertising can more meaningfully support people’s legal right to object. The aims of this work were to: → Bring the opportunities and challenges of GDPR right to object to life, highlighting the benefits to people and business → Clarify what could be implementable in one year (or less) → Inspire advertisers and publishers to give people more control The project's result is a free toolkit to help organisations transition to a new advertising experience that can develop deeper customer relationships. Democracy thrives on truth, but a new study from our partner AI Forensics reveals how AI is being weaponised in France to distort it. This trend in French political campaigns – the strategic use of AI-generated imagery to amplify extremist messaging – was found in 51 instances across major parties, none of which were labeled as synthetic. This deception in pushing divisive, anti-immigrant and anti-EU narratives across multiple platforms flies in the face of ethical campaigning standards and regulatory commitments, such as the #DigitalServicesAct. What’s worse, voters had no way to distinguish these fabrications from reality. “The current situation, where regulatory discussions have not translated into effective action, points to a significant gap that needs to be addressed urgently.” Access the full analysis here: https://lnkd.in/di4pDibK
