I really enjoyed the London Data Week 2024 experience. Participating in the "User Experience Design" workshop by Applied Works provided me with a deeper understanding of the initial stages of the UX process. I learned how to empathize with users, gather data, and extract valuable insights to design better tools and digital products. At Canva HQ, I had the opportunity to attend the Data Storytelling event and learn from many experts about bringing data to life through storytelling. Simon Rowe's workshop was particularly impactful, offering valuable recommendations and tips on how to present data more effectively, giving it purpose and engagement as a compelling story. Data alone can inform or be just numbers, but when combined with effective graphic design it can transform complex information into compelling, actionable insights. Visual storytelling is the key to making data not just understood, but felt and remembered.

Is AI beneficial to society? This is the question that sparked a thought-provoking, multi-disciplinary discussion about a topic that has always interested and inspired me. So, upon seeing that Diverse AI was hosting this conversation for London Data Week, it was a no-brainer. This event highlighted the effects of Artificial Intelligence in society, both in the local sphere and across borders. Some ideas highlighted were: - Ensuring that AI takes a human-centred, user-centric approach - AI solutions should deliver value more than just being an implementation of Artificial Intelligence - We must begin to consider how to make the three P's: people, product and planet the forefront of new developments and innovation in the field of Artificial Intelligence - We should work towards making AI explainable, transparent and causal (ensuring that AI systems understand cause and effect) - Working towards decreasing the prevalence of algorithmic bias as a result of insufficient training data - Everyone should have a voice in AI - The spaces for discussions concerning AI should be widespread and decentralised. One of the topics discussed that is very close to my heart is that of ethics and ensuring data integrity and security as we move forward with the development of AI. I believe it is paramount that we ensure that innovation in this sector remains ethical and accountable to the people it sets out to help. In this way, AI can work towards being increasingly beneficial for society and allow us to do the things that 'make us more human'. Thanks to the panel: Ankit Bharadwaj, Rosie Kitson, Umbar Shakir, Smera Jayadeva, Steven Kleinegesse, Ruth I. #AI #technology #explainable #causal #human

Is AI beneficial to society? Last week in partnership with Diverse AI, our very own Ankit Bharadwaj posed this question to myself and our panel of speakers, Rosie Kitson from Havas, Ruth I. from Diverse AI, Smera Jayadeva from The Alan Turing Institute and Steven Kleinegesse from causaLens to examine the transformative power of AI, the future of AI and its impact on society. It was an inspiring evening exploring diverse perspectives on how AI can transform wider society. Here are our key takeaways: ⚖️Balancing innovation and ethics: AI's potential to turbocharge businesses is immense but it must be harnessed within robust ethical frameworks to ensure long-term sustainability. 👤Human-centric AI: Designing AI that prioritises tangible value and relevance is key. It’s about stripping away the buzzwords and focusing on what truly matters to the target audience. 🌍Diversity and inclusivity: There is a real need for diverse voices in AI development to address biases and ensure that AI benefits everyone, especially marginalised communities. 🔎Transparency and accountability: Regulation must play a central role in ensuring ethical practices with the need for a transparent and accountable AI development process. 📝Regulation and AI literacy: Sensible regulation and increased AI literacy across wider society will ensure AI's beneficial impact on society. Understanding and mitigating the subtle, subliminal effects of AI, such as those in recommender systems, are essential steps forward. This discussion reinforced the importance of a holistic approach to AI with an ethical and inclusive AI design. With thanks to all our speakers and attendees for their valuable contributions and insights! Temporary spaces in London aren’t being used effectively. We can revitalise London’s high streets using data. Nichols explored this at London Data Week earlier this week. On the 2 July, we had the privilege of participating in London Data Week's Data Partnerships event hosted by BusinessLDN. We pondered the following questions: What does smartness in a smart city look like in London today? How is data already being used to solve problems and drive inclusive growth? Joanne Haskins, Innovation Expert at Nichols, took to the stage to discuss how we could use data to improve the temporary uses of vacant spaces on London's lost high streets. The discussion revolved around leveraging data to reimagine these spaces for short-term solutions, maximising their potential until permanent transformations can be realised. It was inspiring to see how data-driven insights can pave the way for meaningful urban revitalisation. This is something Nichols understands well from our role in the Towns Fund Programme in 2022. At Nichols, we are passionate about harnessing data to create actionable solutions that benefit our communities and urban environments. We believe in the power of collaboration and innovation to drive positive change. Other talks were given by Dr Yijing Li, Senior Lecturer in Urban Informatics at King's College London on improving air quality with data and Richard Ford, Partner, Planning Environment, Digital Delivery, Energy & Infrastructure, Pinsent Masons who discussed how can data trusts support food supply chain management. A huge thank you to London Data Week for hosting such a dynamic event, and to everyone who joined us in exploring the future of London. Let's continue to innovate and build a brighter, more sustainable future together. #LondonDataWeek #UrbanInnovation #DataDrivenSolutions #CommunityRevitalisation #InnovateTogether #SmartCities #Regeneration
