Too often parents feel they have to choose between family life and their leadership career, we exist to change this.

About us

At Leaders Plus we work with individuals during maternity leave, shared parental leave and beyond so that they can progress in their careers whilst at the same time enjoy their young families. Too often parents feel they have to choose between family life and a fulfilling leadership career. We exist to change this. Our award winning Fellowship Programme supports Leaders with Babies and young children. Our Fellows have come from employers such as the BBC, NHS, HSBC, Action Tutoring and the Salvation Army. We welcome applications from fathers and mothers. Together with our partners and our Fellows, we are building a positive movement for change so that new parents can thrive in leadership roles, therefore addressing a root cause of the gender pay gap. We have been selected by The Observer and Nesta as one of 50 New Radical organisations and our Founder (Verena Hefti) has won the WeAreTheCity Rising Stars award for her work in setting up Leaders Plus. We are accredited by Social Enterprise UK and have been supported by the RSA (Royal Society for the Arts and Commerce).

What an amazing group of ambitious leaders with children that want to be the change! 🎉 The consensus at the end of the day was that parenting is a super power! This was not least informed by the inspiring panel of senior leaders Emma De Souza, Sylvia Opara and James Stebbing. A huge thank you to them for sharing what they have learnt about combining a senior career with children. The appreciations at the end included 'empowered, emboldened, supported, uplifted community, honesty, generosity of spirit, dedicated time and space, investment in ourselves and each other and clarity. A sharing from my fantastic Mentor Sylwia W. about Dr. Brené Brown who studies courage, vulnerability, shame and empathy. If you’ve never come across Dr. Brown’s articles and TEDs, here is a few points that struck me the most with the link to her TED profile. 💓 What do those whole-hearted people have in common? 💡 the courage to be imperfect 💡 the compassion to be kind to themselves first and then to others 💡 the connection as a result of authenticity 💡 last but not least, they fully embrace vulnerability 🎇 Vulnerability is the most accurate measurement of courage and the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change. 👪To parents, when you hold those kids in your hand, 💥 Our job is NOT to say “Look at her, she’s perfect. My job is just to keep her perfect – make sure she makes the tennis team by fifth grade and Yale by seventh.” 💕 Our job is to look and say “You know what? You’re imperfect, and you’re wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.” Thanks Leaders Plus – An award-winning cross-sector programme supporting working parents and care givers to progress in their career while enjoy the time with family.

Finance is power. Today, for the first time ever in the UK, there will be a female chancellor.

Award winning Social Enterprise CEO | Podcast Host Big Careers, Small Children | Gender Pay Gap | Maternity | Paternity

Today is a historic day in the UK as Labour’s Rachel Reeves becomes the first female chancellor of the exchequer. Money is power. There has never been a more crucial time for a woman to be 'on the money' and able to influence key policy decisions, especially regarding issues affecting working parents like flexible working, the gender pay gap and affordable childcare. Women are woefully underrepresented in financial decision making roles. Today, only 1 in 4 Finance Directors in the FTSE 100 are female. Only 22% of executive directors in finance organisations e.g. banks are females (Statista 2023). It starts early: toys with a maths focus are three times less likely to be targeted at girls than boys (The Institute for Technology and Engineering 2016). Finance roles have power: they influence salaries, key decisions on pensions, maternity benefits etc. But even if you are not after a career in finance, women having finance skills is key to equitable career progression. I have rarely seen an executive director or CEO who didn't have finance decisions as part of their job description. Let's use Chancellor Reeves' appointment as a reminder to keep pushing for financial power because it matters to society to have people in place who can use finance to drive change for a positive purpose. Having a woman in power doesn't always mean better policies for working parents. I am encouraged by the fact that Chancellor-elect Reeves has vowed to "close the gender pay gap once and for all" stating that she feels a “big responsibility” to use the Treasury to improve the position of women across the UK. Alongside the gender pay gap reporting, she previously vowed that firms would be required to publish action plans to show how they are closing the gender pay gap, increase the number of female executives and improve flexibility in the workplace. Given the UK’s slow progress when it comes to closing the Gender Pay Gap (at the current rate, it will take a further 20 years to close) these actions are welcome. However, to shift the dial even bolder steps will be needed. At Leaders Plus our own 2023 research has shown that a big part of the Gender Pay Gap is a Parent Progression Gap. When mothers have children and take time out to care for them, career progression tends to stall. This means they are not reaching the senior, well-paid roles compared to men and is even more true for women from minoritized backgrounds. The data is clear, any employer who is serious about addressing the Gender Pay Gap must take action to close the Parent Progression Gap. What we have learnt from running the Leaders Plus Fellowship for working parents is critical to fixing the Career Progression Gap. More than 60% of our Fellows, (90% of them mothers working flexible) from the last cohort got promoted or a more senior responsibility e.g. board within 9 months. If you'd like to chat about what we have learnt, how to scale this impact or working with us, do DM me.
