If change is the ‘new normal’ why are we not better at asking our people what they want to change? A week ago, I joined a group of inspiring and experienced communicators to talk about what is changing about change communications. We had a lively and enjoyable conversation followed by a tour of a Hitachi Energy facility, kindly arranged by our host Katharina Auer. Having discussed many aspects of what makes communicating about change so challenging, I left wondering why we still struggle with many of these things, i.e. lack of buy-in, leaders not understanding their role, little understanding and empathy for those impacted. I have wrestled with this question over the past week and my thoughts keep coming back to the lack of humanity in change, the insistence of top-down non-human-centered change strategies. How do we break this model and move to a people focused, consultative way to design change that works for the organization and its people? I don’t know the answer -yet! But I am curious to work on it. Anyone already there? Or equally fascinated by this question? A huge thanks to Katie James and Isabel Hull from Kademy for providing the opportunity and the rich discussion and debate.
