Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS) have long been a subject of debate. Some argue they deliver economic, social, and environmental benefits. VSS critics say that it is a #trade barrier which imposes additional costs on #farmers in low-income countries to participate in the global market 💰 This new policy brief finds that #coffee farmers in Ethiopia’s Sidama region experience noticeable benefits of being certified, such as increased yields, prices, and dividends, compared to non-certified farmers 🌾🚜 However, challenges such as affordability concerns and adapting certification requirements to local contexts remain. In this The Financial Express Bangladesh article, Xiangchen Zhang (DDG, World Trade Organization) draws on the work of Richard Newfarmer, Andrew Womer and Christian Lippitsch, who make the case that service-led transformation in Africa can expand export volumes, especially in sectors such as tourism and transport. We spoke to Christian Lippitsch further: 'There is reason to believe that Africa won't replicate Asia's manufacturing-led growth miracle. Instead, African nations need to explore new options to drive growth and exports alongside manufacturing. Productive and tradable services industries are emerging and have already been key contributors to #productivity and #export growth. To make use of newly emerging service industries, African nations need to overcome persisting barriers such as regulatory burden on data, and invest in complementary infrastructure and skills.'
