Renewable energy technologies like wind turbines and batteries are essential for a just transition and require huge volumes of critical minerals and metals to make them. When it comes to critical minerals, the ends – important as they are – do not justify any and all means. Producing them responsibly requires mining with principles. About us
ICMM's vision is a safe, just and sustainable world enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals. Each of our company members – which together account for one-third of the global mining and metals industry – commits to implementing our Mining Principles as a condition of membership. These principles are neither static nor do they represent the ceiling of our ambition. We are always challenging ourselves to go ever further in setting the highest of standards for responsible mining, and delivery. We promise to work collaboratively with associations and other stakeholders to enhance the contribution of mining and metals to sustainable development. Our commitment to working with others does not stop at our industry’s boundaries. We were founded on a spirit of open engagement, and we continue to champion diversity of opinions today to deliver bold leadership for our wider industry and non-resources sectors alike.

How can an industry that 'digs holes in the ground' ever be nature positive? Closing a mine responsibly is a dynamic and iterative process that must be considered from the start and requires close collaboration with authorities and other regional stakeholders to get the best outcomes for everyone involved: the mining company, workers, the environment and host communities. Learn more about ICMM members’ approach to integrated mine closure here, as published in the book ‘102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground’, co-written by Peter Whitbread-Abrutat and Rob Lowe: https://lnkd.in/eG25ERgA

The natural world is being lost at an unprecedented rate. The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) aims to catalyse a shift to an economy that supports nature, giving reporting companies and financial institutions the tools and information to put nature into the centre of decision-making. Find out how ICMM members Anglo American and Vale's use of the TNFD’s new Metals and Mining Sector Guidance is supporting the implementation of ICMM’s nature commitments and contributing to a nature-positive future: https://lnkd.in/edqcHqBU

Digital conservation technologies and services are helping to drive wildlife conservation. In many ways, #TechForWildlife has made many aspects of wildlife conservation easier, more efficient, and accurate. Discover how mining companies are using environmental DNA (eDNA) to quickly build up a picture of biodiversity in an area, and how they are then using this to understand and conserve nature. https://lnkd.in/e6Y9yQ3e BHP, Anglo American, Vale

Typically, between 30-50% of mine-site emissions come from vehicles. Check out our briefing note which shares insights gained from over 5 years of collaboration between mining and metals companies, vehicle manufacturers and technology suppliers to accelerate the roll out of zero emission haul trucks and equipment on sites: https://lnkd.in/eiczrMVG Boliden, Vale, Anglo American, CharIN e.V., Wood Mackenzie, Komatsu

This past week has seen some important milestones relating to our work on nature. Over the past year, ICMM has been an official Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) piloting partner for the sector – which included leading the development of TNFD’s Metals and Mining Sector Guidance that launched last Friday during London Climate Week. We’re ending this week once again on a high note, following two successful sessions hosted at UNEP-WCMC's Nature Action Dialogues, and a very insightful full day Working Group meeting with our group of brilliant and passionate nature practitioners as we collaborate to drive progress on ICMM’s nature commitments. "ICMM is very important for helping us to understand our relationship with TNFD. You have to start, as it's how you learn – and we have to share." -Leticia Guimarães, Biodiversity / Nature Based Solutions, Vale "TNFD's prioritisation methodology not only helps companies to understand their nature-related risks, it is also a great tool for identifying opportunities for nature positive action." - Emma Marsden, Nature Lead, ICMM "Yes, [the assessment process] can be overwhelming – but it is doable, and now there is a wealth of guidance behind it." - Libby Sandbrook, Director of Business and Nature, Fauna & Flora "Start, share and get site-specific." - Emily McKenzie, Technical Director, TNFD Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e9Brk6xG
Guidance will bolster the mining and metals sector’s ongoing efforts to identify, assess, manage and disclose nature-related issues
