The Call for Content and registrations for the ISE EDI Conference are now open! This year we are focusing on change: change in organisations’ cultures and practices that improve outcomes for diverse students and employees. With emphasis on two key drivers of change: 1. How do ISE members become better agents of change to improve the experiences of under represented groups starting out in their careers? 2. How do we change dynamics for the better and boost measured outcomes for those from under represented groups? Found out more and submit your proposal here: https://lnkd.in/dVAqG-7t Only members can submit content, want to learn more? I’m lucky in this job because I get to meet and hear from a lot of interesting people. This last few months has been particularly hectic with trips to #NACE24, the Future Talent Council's summit, and of course, our own Institute of Student Employers conference. Here are some points that have stuck from what I've heard (that in no way do justice to the depth of content delivered!). I’ve learnt a lot about AI and realised that we should all be using it on a day-to-day basis. Even though AI does its work in a non-human way, Kian Gohar gave great insights on how to treat AI as a conversation partner, as a collaborator. AI is much more than a sophisticated search tool. I agree with Dan Black who said AI is coming for your tasks, not your job. Tyler Cowen made the point that the pile of human talent is growing and that pile of talent is more diverse than ever. Tyler also stressed the growing importance of project management skills because of the increased resources that an initiator can deploy. I liked Tyler’s dog trainer analogy – we need to know how to train large language models. Azeem Azhar recommended we spend two days working with an AI tool to understand just how it works. Vivienne Ming warned of the risks AI poses to student learning. When AI gives the answers, students learn less. AI in education should provide context, not answers. In active learning, students think they are learning less when in fact they are learning more. Vivienne had a great test for technology – are we better off when we turn it off after using it? Back at the ISE conference, Elizabeth Linder showed how it takes work to develop young people. Senior leaders need to take the time to support and listen to those just starting out. Nic Marks said that to be ok is not always ok – to be ok is to often be stuck, unhappiness can motivate us to correct things, and to be happy is to feel good and motivated. The three main indicators of happiness are health, relationships and work. Nic’s findings show that happiness drives success rather than success driving happiness. Nice to hear Helen Cooke, Damian Riley and Steven Jones say that recruiters are often nice people who build relationships with candidates. But when line-managers aren't open, this leads people who were open about their disabilities with recruitment becoming less so when doing the job. Bruce Daisley gave us three predictors of wellbeing and resilience. 1/ control of your life. 2/ a sense of self-identity. 3/ belonging to a community. Bruce showed that meeting-free days can transform culture, and shared moments of joy can create culture (is this why everyone likes the ISE awards bash so much?). And for an example of resilience, Stephen Seki’s story was very inspiring. I didn’t get up to study at 4am for my degree! Thanks to Shawn VanDerziel, Stephanie Pallante, Claudia Tattanelli, Daniel Kjellsson for your hospitality. PS. The photo is sunrise in Arizona at 4:30am, sometimes jetlag has an upside.

“Spiraling living costs and the increasing burden of student debts mean cash is king at the moment, but as this research shows there are other factors employers should take into account if they want to attract young people and keep them for the long term." In case you couldn't be there... ISE Chair Joan Moore has reflected and given us a recap of the highlights from the ISE Student Recruitment Conference. "One of the key things that struck me this year was a true sense of intersectionality. As I moved around the conference breakout sessions I noticed how often themes of inclusion, diversity, AI, Gen Z and sustainability cropped up multiple times regardless of the session type." Are graduates becoming more settled in jobs? A new survey reveals the propensity of young people to quit their jobs, explains Chris Rea from Prospects.ac.uk at Jisc. "Graduates may be driven to feel that a place isn’t for them, but sometimes that judgment can be premature. They might be able to adjust to a different way of thinking over time. Perhaps the question should be, is there anything that we could do that would make you happier at work?"
