The Independent Schools Council (ISC) represents over 1,370 UK independent schools, which educate over 537,000 pupils.
About us
The Independent Schools Council (ISC) brings together seven associations of independent schools, their heads, bursars and governors. Through our member associations we represent over 1,370 independent schools in the UK and overseas. These schools are ranked among the best in the world and educate more than 537,000 children each year. The ISC’s work is carried out by a small number of dedicated professionals working out of our offices in central London. We are assisted by the contributions from expert advisory groups in specialist areas. Our priorities are set by the board of directors led by our chairman, Barnaby Lenon. We are tasked by our members to protect and promote the independent education sector in everything we do. The ISC has six principal activities: - Provide authoritative research and intelligence about the sector - Provide legal and regulatory information/guidance - Provide online access and support informing parental decisions - Promote the sector through agreed national messaging and communications - Provide a meeting place in central London for members - Promote public affairs and parliamentary engagement on behalf of the sector

"If there’s a sudden financial shock mid-year, then that compromises our entire budget cycle. We work on very, very fine margins. "Certainly, some of our parents would be priced out instantly. I would expect lots of our parents to phone us and say, ‘I can’t do this anymore, we have to go’." - Simon Larter Evans, principal of Tring Park School for the Performing Arts Introducing VAT on independent school fees from January 2025 would "push parents over the edge" financially, headteachers have warned https://lnkd.in/efuFbjjP

“Families will have made choices about education months before an election was called; they cannot adequately plan for their children’s futures based on speculation, uncertainty and constantly shifting dates... There is still a need for urgent clarification on what the implications would be for, for example, forces families, faith schools and children with SEND but without an EHCP. The Government has said it will engage with key stakeholders on this; we welcome the engagement we have had thus far and look forward to more over the coming weeks and months.” - ISC chief executive Julie Robinson Labour's plan to impose VAT on independent school fees could come into effect from January 2025, The Telegraph reports https://lnkd.in/eZS9Zare

"What we really need is a full consultation and impact assessment from the government to make sure that we are not subject to unintended consequences of this policy, which could potentially damage the state system... There's lots that independent schools can do for the wider education system, and that’s where we'd like to focus our efforts." Speaking to Ben Fryer on BBC Essex, ISC chief executive Julie Robinson raised concerns over the potential impact Labour's VAT on fees policy could have on children, particularly those on bursaries and those with special educational needs. Referencing how the tax could cause disruption across the sector as pupils are displaced into state schools, Ms Robinson added: "Schools and families are going to work together to try and ensure these children can carry on with their education, but it is a worrying time for everyone." https://lnkd.in/eTvDk38j (listen from 36:35)
