Will AI kill the music industry? 🤖 🎶 On 30 April, FKA Twigs appeared in front of a US senate judiciary committee, stressing the importance of artists having control over how their likeness is used. She argued that AI could be used positively, and that she plans to roll out a deep-fake AI version of herself to communicate with fans on social media, so she can “spend more time making art”. But her voice and likeness being used without her consent, specifically for others to make AI-fuelled art with, she said, was “not acceptable”, and she blamed an “absence of appropriate legislative control” for that becoming commonplace. The rapid progression of artificial intelligence in creative spaces has cleaved the industry in half: where some see opportunity, others see exploitation. But it’s not so clear cut between good and evil, artists and corporate overlords. Giants like YouTube have tested AI-fuelled music cloning tools – a revelation that led to over 200 artists including Billie Eilish and Nicki Minaj, to sign an open letter condemning the practise, calling it "predatory". According to NBC, Drake had previously stated on Instagram that an AI-generated clip of him covering "Munch" by Ice Spice was "the final straw" for AI. Drake is also racking up criticism for using an AI-generated Tupac verse in his Kendrick Lamar diss track ‘Taylor Made Freestyle’, which has since been wiped from the internet following a cease and desist from Tupac’s estate. They called the track “a blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time”. Kendrick responded with his own diss track ‘Euphoria’, on which he asked: “Am I battlin’ ghost or AI?”, referring both to Drake’s since-deleted song. Not everyone is against it though: Grimes called these technological advances a leveller and an “opportunity” for artists. She even tweeted “split 50% royalties on any successful AI generated song that uses my voice”, and gave permission for her voice to be used “without penalty”. According to a new study by Vestiaire Collective, fast fashion just ain't it 👗 ❌ Taking a deep dive into the shopper habits of 13,400 research participants, Vestiaire Collective reached some alarming home truths. “Fast fashion is a false economy. Buying cheap, fast fashion is deceptive – in the end, you end up paying twice if not more,” says Dounia Wone, Chief Impact Officer at Vestiaire Collective, in the report. Vestiaire found that, based on cost-per-wear, it’s actually 33% cheaper to invest in vintage, rather than rely on fast fashion. In the long run, for example, a fast-fashion coat costs £4.16 per wear, while one sourced from Vestiaire works out at £1.40. In fact, the platform’s shoppers were found to wear their shoes 30% more times than fast-fashion shoppers – and their bags 45% more. On average, pre-loved items get 76% more wear than your bog-standard fast-fashion item. Of course, shopping more mindfully is easier said than done – especially under the time constraints of life in late capitalism. We’re not pointing fingers! The question remains: are you willing to make the switch from Klarna impulse cops to archival Prada? #fashion #fastfashion #vintage
