Congratulations to alumnus Sir Kenneth Olisa (1971) on his new role within The Leathersellers' Company. The college is grateful to both Sir Ken and The Leathersellers' Company for their support over the years.
We are delighted to welcome Sir Kenneth Olisa to the Leathersellers’ Company as an honorary Freeman and Liveryman. Sir Kenneth Olisa OBE is a businessman and philanthropist, the founder of two technology merchant banks, and the first British-born black man to serve as a Director of a FTSE-100 company (Reuters). We have been connected to Sir Ken for a number of years via Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge, whom we share a long-term partnership in supporting scholarships and access initiatives aimed at improving social mobility. It was here that as an undergraduate in 1971, Sir Ken first came across the Leathersellers by seeing mention of the Leathersellers’ Awards - grants to support students with their studies and to recognise achievement. In 2011, he and wife Julia would also establish a form of long-term assistance for students of the College through the endowment of The Olisa Library. Sir Ken, in his role as His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, is also patron of BIGKID Foundation, one of the Leathersellers’ Foundation’s grantees whose work helping to end youth violence across eight London boroughs through engagement, outreach, and mentoring has been transformative. We look forward to working with Sir Ken to enable individuals and communities across London, and the UK, in his role as an honorary member of the Leathersellers in what he calls, “the total alignment of values”. #cityoflondon

Last week Fitz law alumni and students enjoyed a fascinating lecture by Lady Justice Asplin on the topic of 'What Now for Justice?' The lecture explored whether AI-powered tools can play a valuable role in alternative dispute resolution, boosting efficiency and offering deeper insights, and where caution should be exercised. Many thanks for Herbert Smith Freehills for hosting and providing a warm welcome to come of our current law students.

Congratulations to Threads and Needles and Dropcode on their success in Fitzwilliam’s 2024 Fitzelerate Competition, as well as to all of our participating teams. Fitzelerate is Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge’s annual student entrepreneurship competition. This year, 7 teams of students pitched in our final, with over 25 students taking part in the competition. The competition aims to help students turn their ideas into realistic business propositions, developing the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly entrepreneurial world. Special thanks to our external mentors Nick Fulton and Bill Yost for supporting our students in the programme, and to guest judges Amritjot Jethwa of Appleyard Lees and Ashraf Zarkan, CEO of Biotryp Therapeutics for lending their expertise to our judging panel!
