Based in New Zealand, Rescued Foods takes unsold fruit, vegetables and bread from retailers, manufacturers and growers and turns them into new products for its retail and wholesale customers. The brand’s work kicked off in 2021, when the chain Woolworths invited pitches from a more diverse set of suppliers, at the same time as exploring ways to use its ‘surplus’ food. Shocked by the amount of bread regularly thrown away by supermarkets, Rescued Foods discovered a solution: make baking mixes from the old bread. Six months later the baking mixes are now sold in 29 Woolworth’s stores on New Zealand’s North Island. As part of its journey through the Big Food Redesign Challenge and B Corp certification, the pioneering brand continues to collaborate with customers in the food service sector – prioritising trust and transparency – to eradicate waste.
