On #EarthOvershootDay, let’s recognise the opportunity presented by the move away from a take-make-waste linear economy to a #circulareconomy. Eliminating waste and #pollution, circulating products and materials, and regenerating #nature, driven by design, are critical for business, nature, and society to thrive within #planetaryboundaries. Measuring and reporting on progress are key enablers of this transition, playing a powerful role in setting direction and demonstrating how circular business practices can increase economic resilience while tackling #climate change and #biodiversity loss. Shifting to an economy that keeps materials in circulation at their highest value, and is nature-positive by design, is central to building prosperity. Every building, street, and public space presents an opportunity to innovate, reduce waste, and contribute to nature. The built environment is just the beginning. In the past ten years, it has become clear that a #circulareconomy is investable, happening now, and able to deliver widespread benefits to the economy, environment, and society. Based in New Zealand, Rescued Foods takes unsold fruit, vegetables and bread from retailers, manufacturers and growers and turns them into new products for its retail and wholesale customers. The brand’s work kicked off in 2021, when the chain Woolworths invited pitches from a more diverse set of suppliers, at the same time as exploring ways to use its ‘surplus’ food. Shocked by the amount of bread regularly thrown away by supermarkets, Rescued Foods discovered a solution: make baking mixes from the old bread. Six months later the baking mixes are now sold in 29 Woolworth’s stores on New Zealand’s North Island. As part of its journey through the Big Food Redesign Challenge and B Corp certification, the pioneering brand continues to collaborate with customers in the food service sector – prioritising trust and transparency – to eradicate waste.
