Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected as President of the European Commission! 🇪🇺 We hope this signifies that the next European Commission will be as ambitious, if not more so, than the last on environmental and sustainability issues. To bring Europe to a fundamentally sustainable state, we must hold onto the green and social principles set out five years ago. The policies that are part of the European Green Deal have been vital in stimulating more biodiversity protection and climate change action. For example, the Nature Restoration Law and Fit-for-55 are having a massive positive impact. We are moving in the right direction, but we are not there yet. We still see many challenges to fully embedding systems thinking in the policy-making process. This is why, earlier this year, we co-founded the Systems Transformation Hub: a pioneering partnership of organizations that helps bring systems thinking and action to European policy-making. Alongside our co-founders The Club of Rome, Climate-KIC, Systemiq Ltd., and World Resources Institute Europe, we hope to contribute to a green and social Europe in the next five years with science-driven policies. Read the full collective statement of the leaders of the Hub, Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Kirsten Dunlop, Eva Gladek, Janez Potocnik, and Stientje van Veldhoven, on the reappointment of Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission: https://lnkd.in/e29w_QNt #EU #SystemsTransformation

For the past two years, sustainability has been front and center for HEMA. Yesterday, HEMA released their latest sustainability report! We’re happy to celebrate their milestone and honored to be part of their sustainability journey. Our work with HEMA began by assessing the carbon footprint of the entire organization, including over 30,000 products. Using these insights, HEMA set bold, transparent, science-based targets and committed to reducing their carbon footprint by over 50% by 2030. Taking the next step, HEMA is now expanding its scope by utilizing Metabolic’s leading software platform for corporate nature and biodiversity assessments, Link. Check it out ➜ https://lnkd.in/g5Uc3zpx Link is Metabolic’s easy-to-use software solution for companies to measure, report, and improve nature-related impacts and risks. With the support of Metabolic and Link, HEMA is now well-positioned to meet Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD) requirements and achieve their ambitious sustainability targets. The first step of the sustainability journey is to assess the current state, but how? At Metabolic, we use Material Flow Analysis (MFA), which tracks the ingoing and outgoing materials, energy, water, and waste of a system. We then translate the insights from the MFA into impact hotspots and support our clients in creating targeted intervention strategies. Here’s an example: MFA of the Taiwanese textiles sector. In collaboration with Taiwan Textiles Research Institute, we conducted an extensive analysis of Taiwan's textile material flows and proposed a comprehensive roadmap and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track the progress of the Taiwanese textiles sector transition towards circularity. The Wadden Islands in the Netherlands are transforming into models of circularity! Despite challenges like relying on imported goods and limited waste management, these islands are rich in natural resources and have a tight-knit community. These strengths make them ideal for driving sustainable change. In 2023, our detailed Material Flow Analysis (MFA) identified resource flow patterns and key areas for improvement. This led to initiatives such as sustainable agriculture pilots, packaging-free supermarkets, and energy-saving measures in accommodations. Together with Samenwerkingsverband Noord-Nederland (SNN) de Waddeneilanden, we've pinpointed bottlenecks and opportunities, creating a roadmap for a circular future. Join our call! There is no life within planetary boundaries in the EU without a European Green Deal. However, five years in, the European Green Deal is in a precarious position. Its successful implementation is not about party politics but about ensuring that all EU citizens thrive, not just survive, when facing future pandemics, climate challenges, and economic impacts. Together with two of the Systems Transformation Hub partners - The Club of Rome and Climate-KIC - and over 550 policymakers, researchers, business, and NGO leaders, we call on all political parties to implement a new European Green Deal. 🏙️ Cities face a tough challenge in implementing the circular economy because information is scattered, solutions are hard to scale, and definitions are often unclear! We are tackling these challenges by developing an AI-enabled platform to help cities advance their circular economy missions through tailored action plans. Commissioned by CircularPSP and financed by the European Union, we are designing, developing, and testing this innovative platform to empower municipalities together with our partners at Enjins. Our goal is to help cities adopt circular practices more quickly, widely, and effectively. Here's how we envision it will work: 1️⃣ Cities tap into the platform and, through an AI-assisted dialogue, are encouraged to provide additional context to the system. 2️⃣ With the provided inputs, the AI agent can contextualize a vast body of data into an answer for the user. 3️⃣ Depending on the focus areas of the city and the defined mission, the system will help identify the most important CE workflows and support their execution. 4️⃣ As cities across Europe start implementing these workflows, the outcomes will function as feedback to the system and add to the datasets foundational to its functioning. By breaking down barriers to circularity and providing clear, actionable steps, the platform empowers cities to create a sustainable future for their people. Can systems thinking accelerate high-impact climate investments? At IDEO, the birthplace of human-centered design, we gathered during London Climate Action Week to explore how systems thinking can drive high-impact climate investments. Systems thinking helps identify the root causes of climate challenges and create holistic solutions. This approach aligns stakeholders, builds trust, and addresses power imbalances, which is crucial for transition finance. Key ideas discussed include: 🟩Co-designing for stakeholder engagement 🟩Creating structured data rooms 🟩Understanding diverse risk perspectives 🟩Building trust in transactions 🟩Ensuring equitable interventions Thank you to our speakers, facilitators, and attendees for their insights: Nigel Topping, CMG, Ryan Murphy, Mert Cetinkaya, Kirsten Dunlop, Yiannis Chrysostomidis FRSA, Raj Kalia, Tom Mitchell, Gold Hood, Katie Hoffman, Matthew Moroney and Jason Petralia. We are building a library of interventions that can be used as inspiration for new business models and initiatives. If you would like to build out the library, or refine ideas into implementation, reach out and join the Missing Trillions and the work being done with the Systemic Climate Action Collaborative: https://bit.ly/4aQCbU3 #LCAW #TheMissingTrillions #TransitionFinance #ClimateAction

We are thrilled to partner with the Canadian Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) to build circular Canadian cities! 🏙️ We recently hosted workshops in Canada funded by the Green Municipal Fund. Collaborating with CCRI and partners like the National Zero Waste Council (NZWC), Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Recycling Council of Alberta, and RECYC-QUÉBEC, we promoted systems thinking in urban circularity. The workshops brought together municipal leaders to explore: 🟢 Food waste and sustainable food systems 🟢 Data collection for circular economy advancement 🟢Circularity in the built environment 🟢Scaling up circular economy projects We had dynamic discussions and innovative ideas aimed at building circular economy knowledge in local governments. Thanks to everyone who made this series a success, especially Corey P.. Our team members, Guillermo Corella Dekker and Jorrit Vervoordeldonk, enjoyed leading the workshops! 🙌 👉 For more information and to connect with the CCRI team, visit their website! https://lnkd.in/dxj-eCx #sustainability #systemsthinking #zerowaste #circularcities
