Before we begin – before we get into Dopamine, the effervescent, years-in-the-making debut album by pop superstar Normani, and all she had to endure to get here – let’s get one thing straight. “Motivation”? That song that dropped in 2019 and felt, in some way, like a cultural reset? The track that, in all likelihood, has soundtracked many of your summers and still opens your running playlists? Normani thought it was mid when it came out. And she still thinks it’s kinda mid. “I didn’t like that song, I’m gonna be honest.
It just felt really easy – it felt like the right thing to
do, but it didn’t necessarily feel authentic,” she shares. Five years on, Normani’s new album Dopamine is an exhilarating rush from an artist in full swing. “I feel like [Dopamine] embodies everything I wanted to say – it feels dominant, strong, assertive – but on the flipside, there are so many layers to it. You get the highs, the lows, the thrill of it all. Bebe Vio fell in love with fencing as a kid; by the age of five, she was already dreaming of the Olympics. Then she contracted severe meningitis. She miraculously survived, but doctors had to amputate her legs at the knee and both of her forearms. It was 2008; she was 11. You would think, this is it. Instead, she was like, “Well, I can’t dream of the Olympics any more, but I can dream of the Paralympics.” And so her story began. Now, 64 medals and 27 broken prostheses later, she’s an unstoppable force changing the conversation on disability in sport. A quadruple threat at this summer’s Olympics, Noah Lyles – aka the world’s fastest man – lives a life defined by a series of dizzying digits. A six-time world champion, a 2020 Tokyo Olympic 200m bronze medallist, and a sprinter who has top speeds of
up to 37km per hour. However, for Lyles snatching gold medals and breaking world records isn’t enough: he wants to enrich and transform his sport, as both a culture and an industry. “We have to break away from the Olympic model, meaning that we can’t put all of our eggs in that basket,” he says. “We have to find other ways to modernise the sport and give it more sufficient legs to stand on.” For #TheReadySetGoIssue of @dazed, we chat to the athlete about wanting to spark a revolution in the sport, his goals and hopes for the 2024 Olympics, and if being delulu is the solulu.
